My shop tells me the exhaust manifold must be removed in order to remove and replace the starter. Car is 2006 w/ Z51 and 6=speed manual. Is this necessary? Engine has stock exhaust manifolds (no headers).

Based on my 2005 z51 mn6 - you would have to remove the CAT/pipe from the exhaust manifold and the "H" pipe only.
