The body panels on the Vet are SMC panels, so cracking in the clear coat means that at some point the panels were repainted.
So this means that either SMC panels where not correctly repaired from damage, or the paint/clear coat used to repaint the panels was ***** instead.
To fix the problem, clear coat/paint has to be stripped from the SMC panel surface, which gets you down to if/how the panels were repaired if damaged, meaning that you would be better off with just replacing the SMC panels as needed, then back into a new paint job with clear coat again.
Again, walk away since trying to fix this mess in just the paint could be a money pit to start with. Also, with the amount of repair/repaint to the panels to have the paint/clear coat cracking now, bank that the title on the car is a salvage title that the insurance company wrote off a long time again. And trust me, even with the price of the car half of that of a clean title car, it still not worth it!!!
Yeah I been looking at C5's as well. Found a few around 10500 to 11500 that look in good condition with 80k to 100k miles. The C5 and C6 both look good in there own ways. Was leaning toward the c6 cause of the extra power on tap. I read in another thread that parts are getting harder to find for the C5? They talking about body parts or everything?
Thanks for everyone reply's. You guys are awesome!
My definition of low mileage is like 60 or 70K, I forgot in the Corvette world thats probably called high mileage right? I've seen several C5's sell for $9000 or less with 70K or less miles in great condition - not mint or garage queen's, but very good condition. It's basically a $5000 savings to go with a similar condition C5 over a C6.
Yeah 70k miles is basically "worn out" in vette land. Not because they're actually worn out of course.
I've seen c5s with that kinda miles go for that money, but they were ugly color automatics, typically without many nice options. If you just want "a vette", they're not bad. But if you want a particular color, certain options, etc... the insane value doesnt really extend. The desirable cars are like 12 to 13 with higher miles, closer to 100k than 70k sometimes.
The unloved cars are a great value for a daily. I am slowly looking for a cheap auto vert as a commuter car.

Yes, that makes sense - I definitely haven't seen any Torch Red manual C5's that cheap, usually more like gold automatics, but they seem at least a great value for guys on a budget. I just bought my C6 with roughly 90K for $12.5K and its Precision Red with perfect paint and wheels - downside for many (but not me) is its an automatic and needs about $1-1500 in little things - console trim, tint, upgraded radio, tire sensors etc., once it has that stuff I would rate it very good condition - so good deals are out there at least for us lazy automatic drivers!

Your looking for a C5 or C6, what are your views on the two?

Maybe guys are talking about GM factory parts support? Must be thousands of C5's in salvage yards if you need parts though.

C5, it's mainly be for my gf to commute to work in, putting 100+ miles a day on. Would keep my CE GS, so no reason to have a second c6. She wouldnt want or use the power, frankly one with a blown engine would be fine, I could swap in a 4.8 and she could feel fine with the power of that, haha. The c6 is better in every way, but c5s are getting cheap enough to just use as a commuter/beater.

I just bought my C6 for $12.5K, but it needs at least 1-1.5K in cosmetic interior stuff, new stereo and tire sensors, new tint (pictured), runs perfect!
Stuff like EBCMs and ABS modules seem to be the real offenders. Electronics are really what will scrap cars in the future, they cost a lot, in many cases have to be programmed for a car, and the skillset to repair them is getting more rare by the day.
My understanding is EBCMs can be fixed, not sure about abs modules. Its especially bad on early cars.
That C6 is sexy. I'll see if I can't find a good deal on one. If I was wanting to setting on a Auto and a convertible I could have a cheap one now. But I really want a 6 speed Manual with targa top. Even though the autos are faster the manual is funner.
Though I did find a 01 c5 manual with targo top with 50k miles for 11k that looked nice.

Thanks, yeah totally understand on the manual they are fun, I've seen decent deals on manual too - really doesn't seem like that much of a price difference in the C6 world at least, so maybe you'll come across one. Good luck hunting!

Cool, yeah those lower end C5's just look like such a deal right now, that would be a fun project for sure.

Well, the nice thing about brake systems is they are so basic that you could essentially just dump the whole anti-lock system if you wanted and go full custom. I really like the C5 for the fact that it has door handles and fixed windows - technically you could just throw a generic Painless wiring harness on it one day and dump the entire stock computer/sensor system!
