I left last Friday for a weekend out of town. About 45 minutes into the trip I get a message on that there is a TPMS problem. RR XX was the issue. I checked the air in the tire and it was fine. I figured the sensor was dead, probably a battery.
Made it back read about the sensors in this forum and was going to order and install 4 new ones just because.
No today, Wednesday, I start up the car and start to reach up and clear the warning as I have done each time the car has been started. Guess what? No error message. Toggled through the instrumentation option and it is showing all tires including RR at 30 psi.
What MY are we talking about?
Have TPMS ever been changed?
Battery may have been just about dead but not quite, so it's reading/xmitting now.
In all likelihood it's temporary & will happen again sooner vs later, this time for keeps.
Be wise getting in front of this and source 4 new units, now.
Best guess is that the RR TPMS battery is on its way out. They're good for around 8 years +-, although I've seen claims of 10+ years. Any idea as to how old the sensors are? If something was interfering with the TPMS transmission sequence, then the reported error would have been LR XX, although that does not rule out the LR sensor being bad.
The car is a 2006 with ~61K miles. I've owned it for exactly a month.
I figured it was the battery but with this coming back on 5 days later I wanted to ask.
Since I have no idea how long they have been in there, should I just go ahead and get them all changed now? A local tire (i trust) has them installed and programmed for $83 each. Good or at least OK deal?

IMO, yes.
IF they're original then they're way overdue for replacement.
This Spring I'd all 4 of my *11* y/o TPMS replaced when new skins were installed.
This tack is what long time C6 owners do, they know they'll crap-out after X# of years.
More cost cost effective doing once vs twice.
Sourced 4 new OEM units from an eBay GM dealer, IIRC $144 including S&H.
Installation cost limited since tires were changed at same time.
@ $83 p/pc hopefully includes installation all told +$300 and why it's ideally done w/ new tires..

According to Amazon, what you want is the Schrader 20076 TPMS Sensor for your 2006. I'll leave you to verify that. Amazon's price is $47.99 each. That price includes the nut and seal, which you need as well. Maybe you can get them cheaper elsewhere. Whatever you do, don't go for any aftermarket or programmable sensors, regardless of what your tire guy tells you. Get only the Schrader OEM sensors. As far as programming the sensors is concerned, that's about a 1 minute job with the programming tool. So, it is worth $35 a wheel to have them installed? Again, I'll leave that to you.
Finally, the sensors have the manufacturing date cast onto them. It's kind of hard to see, given that the casting is fairly small. A magnifying glass might help. You can search the forum as to where the casting is, and how to read it. I'd be insisting that if your tire guy has the OEM sensors and you're OK with the price that you verify how old the senors are before they get installed. Don't put them in if they are more than 6 months old, I'd say, because as you now find out, the batteries don't last forever, even if they've just been sitting on the shelf.

I have a 05, and had all my sensors replaced cause they were showing false reading. First it was the right front, then after while cleared then came right rear tire, then it would go out, so I just replaced all four, they don't last forever, and since replacement hasn't had false alarm.
It' time to replace it them, look on Amazon America's favorite shopping network.
Yes, the $83/wheel includes installation. And would be $53 if I were buying tires but the dealership put on new tires before I bought it without changing the sensors. I did check with the dealer that had done all of the work on the car since new and none of them had ever been replaced so I will be changing all of them next week.
Tire gauge for me. For new tpms, tire will have to be rebalanced, more sticky stuff on wheel which will NEVER come off, I have given up. Then the cost? For what? I just check tires then go. Even if tpms worked, I personally dont trust it. Just my opinion.
Bob at house if wheels (vendor here) 40 each and always fresh.... My 2012 will probably need them soon...
Your 2012 may not need them soon; I'm the original owner of my 2006, with 50K miles on it, my tire pressure sensors are still OK.
But when I do replace then, I'll look for quality over price, I don't want to replace them twice.

Be careful. According to the vehicle filter on Amazon, those sensors are for a 2011, not a 2006, which is what the OP has. In fact, Amazon says they are not compatible. The Schrader 20076 are compatible.

My mistake I have a 2010 GS, I should have read his message better
