The 2.5" to 3" adapters are very cheap, and easy to weld in place. The spread width of the mid-pipes (x-pipe) varies with different years. I cannot recall for sure, but believe that '05-09 are the same width, and 10-13 spread distance is narrower. I have both versions in the garage, and will go out and check (insert sound of me running down the stairs and into the garage, and returning)..............okay, the spread width diff is 1.5" wider for the earlier version. I am talking about the distance between the two pipes at their exit (junction for the over-axle muffs).
Besides the later version being narrower at the spread, it also has twin cats. Earlier system did not have cats in the mid-pipe. Just for clarification, I am not certain about when the changes were made, but know I am close on the years. Altering the diameter of the pipes (2.5 vs 3.0) is not a big deal, but trying to match up a miss-matching spread is a pain, and not worth the effort.
While the size (diameter) of the midpipes can be altered with adapters, the mid-pipes have to be the same generation as the muffs, or the spread will not match. So, get the muffs that match the mid-pipe, and it will be easy.
Hope you can follow all that.....good luck.

OP, No, the same axle back will not fit a Z06 & a base model ( 3" vs 2.5" ) as the others have said
For clarification for the OP:
If using early-to-early or late-to-late muff pipes and mid-pipes, it is a simple task on manual trans cars. With an A6, the 3" pipe on the driver's side may not clear the shift lever without relief. Adapting the two different pipe sizes is pretty simple.
Assuming you have a base C6, the adaptation of '06-'13 Z06 and/or '10-'13 GS and/or '09-'13 ZR1 mufflers is rather simple. Cut your current mufflers off of the over-the-axle pipe as close to the muffler inlet as possible. Cut the donor mufflers 3" pipes off leaving about 3/4" of pipe remaining on the muffler inlet. Slip your 2.5" pipe inside the 3" stub (it tapers to 2.5" as it enters the muffler) and weld it in place. To easily match the rotation, before cutting draw a line a couple inches long on both the 2.5" and 3" pipes that aligns with the seam on top of the mufflers.

Reason: alignment correction

Wow....probably a lot easier than my long-winded idea...thanks, I did not think there was enough material at the back of the muffs, before they turned, the work with. Guess I was wrong.

It's just sawing off the base muffler and welding in the bi-mode in the same place. With the exception of the extra weld (see the pic) and the lack of perforations in the tips, if using '06-'10 Z06 mufflers, it looks like the factory NPP option, since the pipes are all 2.5" dia.
Oops! Upon seeing my own pic, I needed to make the correction in the procedure on post #6.
Sorry about my memory lapse.
