Had some battery issues, both car and fob. Both replaced. Went thru the long program process and only one fob got programmed. Suspect the battery was backwards in the one that didn’t take. Anyway, now I cannot get the car into programming mode. Turn the key the five times and nothing happens. I THINK I’m following the proper procedure, but maybe I’m overlooking something?

Yes, the first thing you overlooked was reprogramming the fobs was not necessary.. After you check the battery placement in the fob that would not program, see if you can get the programming mode going again. Be sure you're turning the key fully each of the 5 turns.
Because you did get a fob reprogrammed with the long procedure, you will have to get the other fob reprogrammed if you want to be able to use it.
I understand all that. The one FOB that actually is a new one I bought after buying the car, is working fine. I think it’s set as #1 now, and I’d prefer it to be #2, but that’s no big deal. I think it was previously 3. Don’t know what happened to 4. I tried to program the non working fob as 4, but it was already taken.
i got the car back in program mode. The instructions I had said to set in accessory mode. The forum instructions don’t say that. Without being in accessory mode it asks for fob 3 when I turn the key. When I insert my non working fob in the slot, it says “known fob “. So I guess I’m going to have to try to do the long sequence over again. Any other suggestions?

Just remember that when you use the long programming procedure, you will have to program ALL fobs that you have that you want the car to accept. I'm pretty sure that it won't give you a choice of what fob number to program each fob as. It'll program the 1st one as fob #1 and the next fob as fob #2.
I’m thinking the biggest problem is that the new battery I put in the fob is bad. Went and bought two Duracell with a 9 year shelf life left. We shall try that and then decide where to go next if needed.
Followup: I’ll keep an eye on it for a couple of days, but right now it seems a new $5 battery solved the issue.

Reason: New info

Many forum members have reported getting new batteries that were dead or low in charge. Best bet is to try to buy those batteries from someplace that sells a lot of them, like Wally World.
