I found that the brightness can be annoying and a distraction after a while while night driving if it's run with a direct connection off of the taillight circuit. I found that the dimmer offered by WR at the time I bought ours to be bulky and expensive so I sourced my own at a fraction of WR's device. I mounted the remote controller on the underside of my console lid with velcro. The dimmer is variable from 10% to 100% illumination as well as on and off. It also stores its last setting so if you prefer 50% or completely off that is what you get as soon as your tail lights are on.
