Default Harmonic Balancer ???

Been chasing a squeaky screech that’s most pronounced at 1800 Rpm thru 2000 Rpm. Changed tensioners, pulleys, belts, alternator bearing.

Today I ran car with NO BELTS at all. Just down the block and right back before water temps got up.

The same squeal screechy pulley sounds was STILL there and only thing turning is main crank pulley without belts.

as I look NOT a clear wobble unless I’m staring at center bolt and if I stare just at center bolt it’s jumping all around. Pulley itself does not appear to wobble.

is this clear cut Harmonic Balancer ?? 2006 Z06 with 31k miles.

Thanks for any input!

Almost completely silent at Idle however and revving throughout the rpms. Mainly only shows its head under load 3rd gear, 4th gear at 1800rpm-2000 rpm.

I don't know if this is a clear cut indication of a Harmonic Balancer issue. My 08 with 31K miles had similar symptoms and now is currently in the shop for replacement.

This may well be a Harmonic Balancer issue just not THE Harmonic Balancer issue.

So what’s the latest consensus on Best replacement Harmonic Balancer ? Has ATI straightened out it’s issues? Is it worth going with Innovators West ? Power bond Race version inferior product ??

I have basically stock C6 Z06. Headwork, milled, ported, intake, exhaust. Just want something reliable where I’ll never have to go back down there. TIA ✌️

I have had a ATI on my cam and headers car for 3 years with no issues and would use it again. If you want to save money I would use the Power Bond but make sure it’s the 200 dollar one with the SFI rating.

Wasn't / isn't the infamous squealing / chirping caused by the belt rubbing against the edge of the balancer thus meaning that it would stop chirping if you ran it without the belt ??......whats missing ?....

I thought about that also but he just asked for HB recommendation so that’s what I use.

When you say no belts, do you mean you also removed the air conditioner belt?

If you had no belts on the car and you are still getting a noise, then it is not the HB or a pulley. And when looking at the HB turning, you want to look at the grooves the belt runs in. If they don't have any lateral movement then the HB is probably good.

Is your car an auto or a manual?

Didn't catch that it was a Z. That being the case, maybe the noise is from something with the clutch?

Sounds like the bolt may be backing out. Rare, but I've read about it happening before. Like others said, it's not "the" harmonic balancer issue, just "a" balancer issue. If that is it you'll have to replace the bolt. Since getting in position to replace the bolt is most of the work, you may as well replace the balancer. Especially if it's the OEM one. That way you don't have to worry about it again. It's just a matter of time before it goes out unfortunately. Mine is an 06 and I got over 100K+ from my OEM balancer, but it's a crap shoot. I've done the job on mine and just did my fathers C6 two weeks ago. The power steering lines are kind of a pain, but we still got it done in one day.

I installed a Powerbond PB1117SS on my supercharged C6 and it's been perfect. Cost ~$250. My dads is a stock weekend toy so we used a Powerbond PB1117N, which is ~$80. I recommend the SS one since it's a Z and everyone adds some sort of power eventually! While you're down there, take the time to key it!

I have a 2011 GS (wet sump LS3) with 20,000 miles.

Although my OEM balancer was not bad, I replaced and pinned (keyed) it prior to installing a 'Heartbeat' supercharger on the engine ... Like member "VetteofSD" in the above post did, I used the Powerbond PB1117SS balancer and an ARP bolt.

Cost at the time was $223 for the balancer from Summit Racing and $550 for labor.

‘Manual, removed BOTH belts and drove about 3 blocks and same ‘external’ squeal noise at 1800 rpm-2k under load.

Balancer itself looks to be tracking straight BUT looking at center BOLT it looks like it’s jumping all over the place

So, I’m thinking there are a lot of people who do not actually remove both belts and drive around and to still hear the HB chirping/squealing.

Mine is pronounced at 1800-2000rpm but can faintly hear a rubber/metallic dragging noise ever so slightly throughout the Rpm’s.

its definitely an external noise associated with a pulley.

New HB Powerbond Race Version and ARP bolt going in within the week.

So with both AC and serpentine belt removed it still squeaks? Doesnt sound like a pulley to me since they’re not spinning.

Sounds like a lifter is eating into the camshaft Which is fairly common or a spun bearing.
