Driver Side Master Switch: the up/down for driver window doesn't work, also the back-lit LED is out. The LED is functional for the passenger window only, but the strange thing is it can only raise the passenger window up, and not down.
Passenger Side: up/down works fine.

Any thoughts on potential problems?
Did you ever resolve the problem?
Was the driver's door panel taken off recently? Liquid spilled into switch. Did you check the circuit breakers and fuse for power windows in the passenger side floor fuse block? It could simply be that the switch contacts are dirty, or a disconnected wire. I don't know of any potential problems, just electrical idiosyncrasies with these cars!

. Have you tried to index both windows with both doors CLOSED ?

I don't think you can index the driver window, if it doesn't go up or down at all! The switch for the driver window doesn't respond.
"Power Window Initialize
After a power reconnect such as battery replacement, the window index-up feature will not function until the system is initialized.
Once power is restored: 1. Close the door. 2. Raise the window and hold the switch up for three seconds after the window is closed. 3. Release the switch, then hold the switch up again for three seconds and release"

If you're already sitting in the car, and just closed the door and the switch doesn't work. What makes you think by opening and closing the door again, is going to make any difference? If the window doesn't go up or down at all, how are you going to do this? "1. Close the door. 2. Raise the window and hold the switch up for three seconds after the window is closed" If the switch is broken, or has a dirty contact, not getting power, it's not going to let you do the procedure to index.
Either the switch is disconnected, or broken, and has to be replaced! One last thought. He could try disconnecting and re-connecting battery as a last resort.

Who ever said anything about opening and closing the door again. Try the passenger side and see what happens. Then try the driver side. Try to help the OP and not guess like you are doing.

How would you interpret this? "Close the door and try !" To me it means, if you're already in the car(which he was), open the door, to close the door and try again! The passenger window is not the problem if you use the passenger door switch. The passenger window goes up and down with no problem! The problem all stems from the driver door window control, or a problem with the motor, or 6 other things. It's all conjecture, so this just a waste of time, without feedback from the OP!
