Windshield replacement
I picked up a nasty rock chip/crack last week. Insurance sent out Safelite which stated too large to repair. $1417 for replacement. Ouch!!
Stopped by a local glass company here in town and was quoted $685 with HUD or $315 with non-HUD glass. I have HUD so is there that much of a difference? I'm sure I'm not the only person with this question...??? Leaning towards the $315.

I believe I paid around 400 for mine at the local auto glass shop. No HUD but if you have the box on the window they need to order the correct one. The first one they ordered didn't have some mount for it.

I have OnStar but it hasn't been upgraded (2005) so basically it's useless. I planned on leaving it off. I was basically curious to whether the HUD glass is that much better and/or would I still see the HUD but at a diminished view?

I replaced my windshield with a non HUD windshield and my HUD works fine. No difference at all. I got that idea from several members here who said they did the same. No need for a special windshield from what I see.

Not surprised the non hud worked fine. My non hud windshield reflects the dash quite well. And is very annoying. i would think the speedo would show up fine. Must just be a way to get more money for glass.

Just a thought.....are you looking at the deductible on your policy for Comprehensive versus Collision. For example, on my policy with Hagerty, the Collision deductible is also $500, but Comprehensive deductible, which covers windshield damage not caused by a collision is only $100.

FWIW, I just had my windshield replaced (for the second time) by Safelite. It is a very involved process, the cowl, A pillar trim, and some other misc bits need to be removed, and the new glass is bonded to the frame. I would not trust a mom and pop glass shop to do the job, take it to an expert.
As far as HUD vs non HUD glass, there have been several threads on the subject. Most people say that the difference is very slight, if it is even noticeable at all.
