Default Impact Wrench Recommendations

These old muscles are having a hard time removing lug nuts with a breaker bar. Looking for impact wrench recommendations. My compressor is only 5 gallons so I believe the pneumatic type is out of the question. So, that leaves me with battery or 110v versions.

Comments appreciated.....Dan

I have an old Snap On that I love and still works like a charm. Pricey though.

I bought Amazon’s Enertwist. Claims 1050 bolt breakaway ft lbs and 450 tighten. Who knows? So far so good on the Corvette and Navigator. $70. It is corded.

Hilti 22v cordless impact. I have every cordless tool in their arsenal and they are superior to anything out there bar none.. We switched everything from Milwaukee to Hilti about 3 years ago. Buy the best the 1st time. Do it nice, or do it twice. 👍

I have used it to remove the harmonic balancer bolt; zipped it right off. Just don’t use it to put the lug nuts on or you will rip the studs off.

Home depot has (or had last time I was in there earlier in the week) a kit with this tool, the m12 electric ratchet, and batteries and charger for 200 bucks. Was thinking I need to pick it up.

I have two Ridgid battery operated impact tools. Rigid makes great products for a decent price.

I bought a Harbor Freight electric 1/2" impact wrench for $30 or so. It's a Chicago Electric brand and it works great.
I've used it a ton and like it.
Good luck!

I have used several of the 110v impact guns (DeWalt, Milwaukee & HF) and while they all do a good job they are very heavy. I think that the majority of the battery powered ones are lighter, so I suggest shopping for one in person as opposed to online.

I have a battery powered Ryobi (worthless) and a cheap Harbour Freight air powered impact that is perfect for home DIY use (In a Professional shop I don't know if it would hold up).

Here's a guy that tests equipment, it might give you an idea of what will meet your needs.

I also have the Milwaukee high impact, and it's great. I hope they eventually go to the newer style multi-LED design, but it's still a great tool.

One day, I hope to own a Milwaukee M18 impact. 4-way tire iron has worked well for the last two decades though. REALLY wish I had it removing my leaf spring mount bolts. Shoulders hurt just thinking about it. Most blue locktite I've ever seen on four bolts!

I thought the same way, used to only use the pneumatic impact or regular tools. However, I now have the Fuel high-torque impact, Fuel Ratchet, Fuel Hammer Drill and Impact driver, and I cannot believe how much easier it is to work on everything. Wheel lugs loosened? Seconds. Removing every single header bolt, even when stubborn? Less than a minute per side. My friend was hand-loosening one of the hard-to-reach bolts and I had the entire driver's side done before he had even finished that single one.

My shoulder and hands thank me every time I work on the car, and I highly recommend it.
