Encountered my first issue with my new to me 2008 base C6 with the A6 transmission. After starting it, I was unable to get the shift **** to come out of park to back up. Fiddled with it a bit and finally got it to work. The problem reoccurred intermittently, and seems to work normally if I set the parking brake. Any ideas what the problem is? What does one do if it happens before getting to a dealer? How can the car be moved or put on a flatbed?
After more research, I think I may go ahead and modify my A6 shift mechanism to either add a manual release wire to the locking pawl or just cut the pawl off entirely. I don’t want to have to worry about having the car stuck in park in the future, and that looks like a simple and permanent fix.
I’ve found videos for removing the console trim to gain access to the area under the shift lever boot, but they’re all of manual transmissions with the shift **** removed. My question is, does the pistol grip shift **** with the trigger release need to be removed to get the console trim out of the way? And if so, how does one do that? Looks like the **** on a manual just screws off. I’m sure that’s not the case with an automatic. Or can the boot remain in place and be detached from the rest of the console trim allowing the trim to be moved out of the way?
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but I only want to do this once and not get in over my head or screw something up.
I have found this problem on my C-6 occasionally as well. Before you dive into the center console; I have had luck pushing the shifter forward ( to take the stress off the locking pawl and solenoid pin) Not sure but I think t makes it easier for the solenoid to pull in and release the pawl.

I wired mine back.
Didn't have to remove shift **** nor boot.
Easy job just take your time.

You do not need to remove the shifter ****, the boot will slide up to the **** and be out of the way.
I tied my pawl and have the wire going back to the console. That way, the safety mechanisms are still in place, and I can unlock the pawl if needed.
