Default Crank engine by hand?

Quick question. When I replaced the headgasket on my Prius. I turned the engine over multiple times with the crank bolt getting TDC. And never even thought twice about the bolt possibly being able to break.

but I came across a post asking this same question about a ls2. And people seemed to think the bolt could snap. Or the threads could get screwed up.

so I’m curious. What methods have you guys used on the LS motors. To turn it over? Is the bolt breaking a big possibility/concern?

(all plugs out btw)

The instructions for changing the LS harmonic balancer always state to put a manual in gear or an automatic with a flywheel locking pawl in place of the starter to be able to torque the bolt without turning over the engine. This would indicate that the engine will turnover before reaching the torque-spec of the bolt. The bolt shouldn't break until reaching torque values that exceed this spec, so feel free to manually turnover your engine.

If you have a manual, just be sure it's not in gear.

The bolt is not going to break. Installation requires a starting torque of 37 lb-ft. followed by 140 degrees of rotation. I need a flywheel lock and a 3 foot cheater bar to do it. With the plugs out, you can spin the motor with a ratchet.

Actually getting to the bolt with the steering rack in the way is another story.

I've had no reason to try this on my LS3, but in the past it was easy to spin an engine with the plugs out by putting a ratchet on the alternator pully nut. I figured the pully would slip before the belt broke or stretched in any case. A couple of times, I just pulled up on the belt and that worked too if I only wanted to turn the crank a few degrees.
