When I removed the liner for the passenger side rear compartment in the hatch area, there is an electronic box mounted on the front side, maybe 6”x4” with wiring on the top going into the interior. Can someone tell me what this controls? Thanks!

Thanks everyone, that is it. The on star module. I am assuming removal of it won't cause any issues since it is a track car and doesn't have it.
You have to use a jumper in the wiring or you won't be able to start the car.
I wrote a simple fix for this several years ago. Search "on star HOXXOH" and hopefully you'll find it.
Thank you, I see the prior post. So long as the car starts, the jumpers were done correctly? Does it affect anything else?
I assumed that OnStar tapped into the ignition system as a method to disable the car in the event of theft, so yes, if the engine starts/runs, you've bypassed the OnStar control. I didn't create the whole jumper thing, but just simplified it by using paper clips. I never heard of anyone else having any other issues due to using jumpers to bypass the system.
