These are the temperatures after driving around town using the paddles.
Upshifting around 4-5.5k &
Downshifting around 2.5-3k
Should I be concerned with these temperatures? They seem high to me ⤵️
Is this steady cruising or typical Cal traffic stop and go? What’s Ambient temp at the time? The temps look higher then I would like, especially the A6 temp, that will lead to early demise, it did mine.
Check for debris in your AC condenser and radiator reducing air flow. Flush out from the back side.
You should probably get a trans cooler as well.
My oil temps here in South Florida dont go much above 185... and I drive WOT everywhere I go.
If my oil temps where above 200 degrees, I would be looking into a remote oil cooler with dedicated fan and a Thermostatic controlled bypass set to 185-190 degrees. The bypass will keep oil from flowing to the cooler until it gets above the 185-190 degree. At that point it will allow oil to the cooler. This will help with quick warm ups and a very stable oil temp.
That's the kind of coolant temps (or even a few degrees higher) I would expect stuck in traffic with a stock rad, where the fan is the only source of air flow. Since the only cooling for the tranny is via the heat exchanger in the rad, the tranny coolant temps are as one would expect with that coolant temp, but higher than I personally would like. Same is true of the engine oil temps. So if you are not stuck in traffic or just sitting there idling, then I'd say your coolant temps are too high. As NYC6 points out, a likely cause would be dirt and debris in the A/C condenser and rad, blocking air flow.
According to the Owner's Manual: max. coolant temp is 255 degrees F. The car is most likely going to go into limp home mode (at best) over that temperature. The max. trans temp is 270 degrees F (Owner's Manual). So it would be unusual for the trans temp to exceed the coolant temp since they share the same radiator. Oil temp isn't an issue since Mobil 1 can handle 356 degrees F (general research & an article from Hot Rod magazine and Mobil advertises it at 500 degrees F!!!) and the engine would be stopped on the road way before getting to that level. It seems a lot of old info still circulates "around" and doesn't seem to reflect the current product capabilities. Mobil 1, Dex-Cool and Dexron VI are not like the stuff of the "old days". Might the longevity of the trans fluid be reduced if high temps repeatedly happen? Perhaps, but if you are just keeping it on the street you'll be fine.
Circle D transmission is about the only company that now rebuilds the 6L80 trans. They rebuilt mine after it failed two years ago. They say that the unit runs hot and is quite heat sensitive. They recommend keeping the fluid temps under 180* as much as possible. My transmission never even got close to 270*. If an A6 is running +200 regularly it will shorten its lifespan significantly.
