Hey how is it going Y'all, new to the Corvette family, just purchased an 05 Black base with 43k miles, its in amazing condition. The only thing is that it makes a strange noise when accelerating normally from a stop. As I let out the clutch and the vehicle starts to accelerate, there is a sound that I would describe as a grinding or like Whining. Any idea about what could be causing this sound?
Video For reference
congrats on the 2005 and welcome to the family.
Thanks for posting, I listened to the video and sounds like some kind of bearing noise to me when you put a load on it, maybe. Others here can pinpoint it better.
That is your rear diff, jack up the back and drain the oil and I bet you find metal shavings.
Hope that's not the issue but it sure sounds like the exact same sound when my son was driving his 05 (now mine) after having the diff changed due to taking it to the taking it to the track and blowing out the diff. I had a RPM Stage 4 diff installed and after picking it up from the shop and during his trip back to college in Austin, the new diff made the exact same noise, he sent me a video just like you posted. RPM replaced it with another diff. The video my son sent me had the EXACT sequencing of getting on/off the throttle and the noise made was EXACTLY the same.
Good Luck - drop the diff fluid and check for metal is my recommendation.
Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the site. I recently purchased an '05 M6 as well with a strange sound as well. Need to know a bit more....what gear are you in when you hear the noise? Does it seem to be there at smooth speeds in 6th gear then disappear upon acceleration or deceleration? I'm also concerned by the shifter handle moving like it does in the video...shouldn't do that. What I hear in mine is not quite that loud but similar. Took it to a local dealer and their top Vette mechanic took it for a drive. He thought it was ring and pinion alignment but said in my case it wasn't loud enough to be concerned. I would definitely change the diff fluid (watch a video on it, it's a little different on an 05) and see what the fluid looks like. See if there's any metal filings in it or if it's dark. Also change the trans fluid (again, videos on that too). Sometimes these things disappear with fresh fluids. These cars also use a torque tube that contains bearings. You might just have to find a Corvette specialist (NOT a dealer if possible) to take it for a drive and get his opinion. Don't think the issue is your clutch. Could also possibly be a wheel bearing which would be the best of all outcomes (fairly cheap and easy). Good luck, keep us posted.
Everyone is just guessing.....could be anything in the drive train from the clutch to the diff. Best to contact a local Corvette club in your area; ask for recommendation for a good Corvette tech; & have him check it out.
