How much up front money is required to purchase the warranty? And what is covered? I’ve decided to just put a few hundred bucks away each month for a year or two to have available for possible repairs. Figure that should cover most anything, and if nothing goes wrong, you’ve just paid yourself.

Useful for German cars. An British ones. Less so American or Japanese.

I opted to buy one when I bought my 09 in 2015. When it was financed into the car it was pennies on the dollar per month, no big deal.
Fast forward to July 2019 I noticed a fuel smell in the garage and it got worse day by day. Took it to a recommended dealer and found I missed the 10 year mark by two months, GM wasn’t going to pay for the dropping of fuel tank and pump replacement…..go figure, yet if I had the caddy that’s covered for life of vehicle or so the dealer told me. ( Caddy’s have the same stupid fuel setup).
Thats when my extended warranty paid for itself, 100 dollar deductible and all parts and labor covered. So yea I “lucked” out with the purchase of mine.
Good luck with your decision.

Mathematically speaking... they are a bad bet. About the same odds as betting the roulette wheel.

It's insurance. The purpose is to pay for an expense that you could not otherwise cover, at least without difficulty. Like any other insurance it is not intended to pay for itself for everyone.

AARP and Consumer Reports say NEVER buy an extended warranty on anything. In particular on a car as they're nothing but a profit center for the dealer. Dealer pays about $1500, sells it for about double that, then the warranty company argues with you about every claim trying to wiggle out of covering it. Not a good investment in my opinion.

Never bought an extended warranty in almost 40 years of buying cars, and never would have collected on one.
