I'll have to try mine out of curiosity to see if it even works.
Well it does work, but as others have said it's a pretty hooky looking set up and I could see where it could be easily broken into if someone really wanted to. So here's how it works, a hook comes up out of the console (bottom arrow) when it's in the locked position and hooks into a slot when the door is closed (top arrow), both the hook and the slot are metal pieces but the lock cylinder appears to be plastic.
Typically if I have the top off, I'll close the windows, lock the car, put my gear in the bins under the hatch, there's just enough room to open it with the top there.
It's possible someone could reach in or climb in the car and open the hatch but it's pretty awkward and obvious.
Okay, so my sister has a C5 with a locking console and my mother is ecstatic that she's got a console and glove compartment that automatically locks with her car key fob (which could be the most awesome feature of the car!). I see what looks like vestiges of a lock mechanism in the molded parts of my 2011 console and lid, but it seems GM didn't have a locking console then. Has anyone installed a locking console in theirs? Are there years of C6's that came with a locking console that I could salvage parts from? Is there a cool aftermarket solution hiding someplace? Can any you cool cats comfort my concern and provide consultation to console my lockless console c6 Corvette?
although my 2006 has a lick on the console cover, I've ysed it ince, just to try to eee if it worked. It did.
I'm fairly certain that with a bit of time, and using a stroke cylinder, one could have it attached to the mechanism so it pushes or pull the latch mechanism in the lock position on loss of power when the car shuts off.
As far as I know only 2005 had the lock. My early build (March) 2007 did not have a lock.
I have a 2008 and it has the lock, it is ripped out, I bought it this way. I am gonna replace console but not hook up the lock mechanism so it doesn't get stuck. I already have one with a lock so at least it will look stock, not that I care really, probably can just put in a later one without the lock. I also read something about console possibly being different if you have power seats or not, not sure of that info, just want to make people aware of the possibility. Best bet is to take old one out and see if there is a part number or call dealer with vin # and ask part #, then look on ebay, car-part, or wherever.
My 06 Vert has the locking console and as stated a few times above...it is NOT really that secure of a system.....enough to keep honest people honest but that is all.
