aloha gang,
My car was at home in a storm, water was almost up to bottom of dash. About 2 hours, then drained out. Headlights stayed on til the battery died. My wife said. I went out the next day, the car started as soon as i touched the button.Didnt even have my foot on the brake. Car ran for a few minutes, would not go into gear. I shut it off. Alarm worked, dash and all guages worked, headlights stay on,radio had static, a/c came on. The start button is green, and accessory yellow on at same time. Only code i have is PO700. But the battery died, so maybe some got erased. Insurance said total loss. 28k. But i can buy it back for 10k I have so much into this car, supercharger, headers, wide body kit, suspension, and on..... The bcm should be toast, I tune a little bit, so i can use tech 2 or whatever. I will buy it. But is it worth it? Has to be more wrong than the bcm, and tcm right?
Thanks for any tips. I have to decide by tomorrow.Thanks. Todd
For $10k you could most likely recoup quite a bit more in selling most the oem parts not affected as well as the mods if they didn't get destroyed and not visibly corroded.
IF you have the time and space.
If, by saying "aloha" you are located in HI?.. forget it. The lack of buyers and shipping costs would most likely be prohibitive.
Unless you can locate another 08 at your location I would take the money and run. On the other hand if you found another 08 or similar year that you could transfer your after market parts, wide body kit etc, then maybe I would buy it back.
The smart folks have spoken. By all means, let it be totaled. You need to negotiate for a higher payout, though. You have good reason, based on the lack of top notch, used Corvettes on the island. You could work up a list of the best and highest priced '08's for sale on the mainland, then add in shipping to HI, and argue that number should be the payout. It costs nothing to ask.
As for buying it back, you need one of two things: Either an empty garage and at least 6 months of steady work before it is ready to go, or a good shop that knows Vettes in and out, and will work with you on everything.
If you have neither of those available, I don't know how you are going to keep your sanity while you try to bring it all back to life, properly. Even then, it will always have a "salvage" or "rebuilt" title.
As you said, you have a lot of extras money in it. If you're armed with actual receipts you have a strong negotiation position for a higher payout.
But... only you know what it's worth it to you. If it was fresh water damage and it was dried out quickly, I'd buy it back. We had a '72 Corvette that was flood damaged so we stripped it down, replaced the carpet, seat foam and drove for three years without issue. I have the room, I've worked on cars my whole life and I also like a challenge. As others have pointed out, you live on an island, my area is surrounded by Corvettes so parting it out would be a final option for me.

there’s enough vette guys ( mostly military) I could. But like you said. Not enough room. Or I would keep it, I cleaned the BCM and reinstalled. No change. I might have time to swap the wide body fenders with the stock ones tomorrow. That’s about it
Well… only 55,000 on it, to much mods to list, I bought the car back from GEICO for 10k, they gave me 30k. A gallon of 91% alcohol, 2 tubes of dielectric grease, and 2 gallons of Wd-40. New carpet and seats on the way.
opened up the bcm, cleaned it with a brush and alcohol, looked brand new. Ripped out the carpets, sprayed alcohol on every thing, cleaned and lubed all connectors, cleaned the harness, opened and cleaned my plx boost and wide band sensors. Cleaned the undercarriage and wd-40’d everything. Changed trans and rear end fluid. No water entered. Same to the engine compartment. Clean pcm connectors and lubed.
car runs perfect. Not a single hiccup. I also time, so re downloaded my current tune, went for scan. Car still looks brand new. I’m my case it worked out. Took me 2 full days of busting ***.
Im going to make a how to thread with a billion pics in a few days for those who want to try this in the future. 20k leftover for me.
