Default Onstar with 3G service

What does it mean for C6s with Onstar now that the 3G wireless signal is being discontinued? Can Onstar be updated in these cars?

OnStar in the C6 actually uses 2G, which will be gone by the end of year too

I spoke to Onstar and they say they can maintain service through this year. In the parallel they claim to be working on some sort of device that can be added to the car to allow service to continue beyond that.

From their website:
A Solution is Coming Soon
The 2G network that connects your vehicle to OnStar® will sunset in December 2022. Once the 2G network sunsets, the three-button OnStar interface in your vehicle will be deactivated. GM is actively working to evaluate options for vehicles impacted by the 2G network sunset. GM will notify you when a solution is available.

Just a good reason for me to finally pull out the OnStar window brick.

This fix sounds like a frequency converter. The carrier frequency is different with the new generation of wireless. I wonder if this converter will be included in the subscription or if they will charge extra for it.

I called them (OnStar) last fall. They will send you the converter if you are a subscriber, but if you don't subscribe, you're out of luck. Even the emergency button will not work without the converter, so it's completely useless unless you subscribe and get the converter.
