Will be replacing the cats on my 08 base, just wondering if anyone here has done them and how difficult it is. I'll be doing it myself and wondering what I'll be getting myself into
Not that hard, but a day before you go to do the swaps, spray all the bolts from the end of the exhaust manifolds to cats, and after cats to start of X pipe with penitrating oil, and let is sit for a day not driving the car. You may luck out and this saves the bolt, but may not and have a few snap and need to be replaced instead.
So step one is to remove the pre O2 senors to start with, then get under the car to unbolt the bottom of cat pipe from the X pipe, the unbolt the car to exhaust manifold up top to drop the cat's out one at a time. To reinstall, pretty much just the reverse, but get all the bolts started before you go to tighten them back up.
And be very sure that the problem is the cats are defected to start with, since they are not going to be cheap in the first place.
If you are replacing the downpipes with same, it is pretty easy...just do as rl stated. I assume you are not going to replace them with a mid-pipe cat, right?
I've had my cats on and off umpteen times fooling with some poorly fitting shorty headers. Absolutely drown the bolts with BP Blaster and let soak a day or so. The first time it will be a pain but it's not really that bad.
