I experienced a C8 briefly for a 20 minute rip through a deserted industrial park one Sunday last summer.
My impressions were that its a much more complete package and easier to live with on a daily basis.
Where my 08Z is a toy, this was simply amazing in how easliy accesible its performance is. No cringing over speedbumps or driveway access with its lift feature, and man...matt the throttle and it instantaneously drops a bunch of gears and just digs in and goes without any big issue of fishtailing etc.
Its not fair to compare interior advancements because of the many years of developments, but I did find its seats close to (but still not as good) as the Caravaggio seats in my 08Z (obviously my originals sucked).
Mine is a 3LZ, and the C8 I drove was a base interior model, but Z51pkg, so the interior really wasn't 'richer' looking.
Its an extremely well thought out interior, but so too is the C6. My final thoughts were its so modern...but to me, the C6Z was more personal and involving and I appreciate the simpler analog style guages, etc.
Bottom line, is my car is a toy not my daily, so I don't mind it having more of a personality...the C8 is more homogenous in nature. And then, of course, as amazing as the C8 gearbox is, I like the involvement of shifting and rev-matching in my toy car. It further distinguishes it from a daily. I won't comment on styling...that's personal, but the C8 is a truly wonderful modern car that punches above its weight and it uses all its tools to do so. Its really not a this or that...its very very different.
I also encountered one on track, which happened to be semi-pro driven, and I was surprised how much trouble I had reeling it in (ebb and flow...I had a top end advantage and slight tire advantage), but a big lbs/hp ratio advantage.
Also, that was a car that could be flogged hard for a 30minute sesssion, whereas my 08Z (when it was stock) would start running hot, oil, coolant, overheating brakes etc in short order. I'll say a C8 is much better 'out of the box', as I had to make numerous improvements not to go faster, but to sustain it for longer. So there's that
I spoke with the driver afterwards, and after I had overtaken him, he tried to hang on (unsuccesfully)...said he was really flogging it within an inch of its life.
So, irrespective of my own skills (been road racing for decades), but i think he was flogging it harder than I was (I can't afford to take my car home in pieces).
But it was a real fun experience and comparison. He said it was incredibly easy to push 10/10ths (not his car!) and to extract every last ounce of performance. Said he really didn't feel the car would get away from him at any point and that it could make most drivers a hero.
So, I say, like posters said above, hang on to your C6 'if possible', and defer your decision until you've experienced the two cars. And if the C8 hits the right vibes with its bells and whistles, your C6 likely won't really have depreciated and you can sell it then, perhaps only paying a bit of interest on $$ over the overlap.
I do know what its like selling a car, then having sellers remorse after the newness of the replacement wears off
Good luck
Thank you for your detailed analysis of the C6 vrs C8. You gave me a lot to consider. Should I not be able to test drive the C8 before I submit my build to the dealer, I will cancel my order and live with my C6 and that’s not a bad thing. At this point of my life, this would be the last chance to get a C8 but at least I know what I have. The unknown is scary. Thanks again!
If you have the money and you will actually use the car (and it won't be sitting under a cover 11.5 months of the year, get the c8. Its night and day compared to a C6. Yes our C6s are nice looking and the c8 will take some getting used to, but c8 is nuts. Reason I don't have one is I'm married with two kids and I don't have time to drive it. Either the weather sucks or the destination parking sucks, or the traffic sucks or I have to take 3 passengers or there's a half inch of snow and gravel. If I was single, or if I lived in a warm climate, or if I didn't have kids, I'd go put name down on a c8z. In the meantime my C6 sitting in the garage all day long is good enough.
I have a 2008 C6 with the 6spd manual transmission, Z51 option and NPP exhaust. My father has both at C7 and a C8. I really enjoy driving the C8 but because I love driving manual transmissions, I wouldn't give up the C6 for a C8. I also think the C6 is more comfortable. Somehow the C8 seats don't fit me well (6 ft, 195lb guy). One other drawback to the C8.... it takes be about 30-40 min longer to wash and dry due to all the angles, nooks, etc. The C6 is a breeze.
No interest in a C8. Don’t care for cylinder deactivation and having engine longevity. When u see the taillights lit up at night it looks like a “come here” finger.
I had a used C6, went to a new C7, and finally a new C8. The C8 was great, BUT I missed the engaged driving feeling of a standard transmission. Sold the C8 for 30% over purchase price, and just bought a C6 60th Anniversary edition. Excited to be back driving a true sports car🏎
I do not like the wall of switches that bisects the C8 cabin. I read somewhere that they were doing an early redesign to get rid of that but it's still in the '23 Z06. If they eliminate that for '24 I'll be looking for a low mileage Z06 in ~'28. My '13 GS will have to hold up till then.
