I've has my 05 for about a year now and its been great to me however as of recently I took it to a shop near me to diagnose a howling noise that I originally thought was coming directly from the transmission as I only heard the noise when it was in gear and my foot was off the gas, however the transmission was fine. it was diagnosed as my differential was failing I didn't get much info past that from the shop I took it to. They did let me know GM no longer makes the differential assembly and that no one in my area could be sourced to do the work. (I was already hard enough to find someone to even look at my manual transmission as it is. these were the only guys in town that would do so) my dad has his own body shop so I have access to a lift and most other tools the only issue is actually sourcing the same differential as I cannot find one and thy are discontinued. Wondering where I should go from here don't have really too much experience myself working with cars however never opposed to a learning experience. I've read multiple things such as converting to a C5 Z differential but don't really understand what I need to do so and more so what the best course of action is either a rebuild? or swap? apologies for the lack of knowledge as most of this is very new to me and id like to get to know more. not really concerned with a budget more so less complications due to a lack of knowledge for myself,
Appreciate all responses ahead of time, Thank you!
Your profile doesn't say where you're located but my suggestion would be to do a Google search for a local Corvette club & get a referral to a Corvette specialty shop from the club.
Like these guys said, look for a Vette shop\club in your area who can get you to a reputable Vette mechanic. You may have to end up sourcing the diff from RPM which they will sell a 06+. If I remember correctly, the C5Z doesnt mate up as easily as the 06+. You can also try Zip if you want a DIY project.
I have a 2005 as well diffs are the weak point of the 05. I went with rpm they have the kit to swap to a newer diff. I got a built diff also from them so I don’t have future issues
