Default Navigation update

I have a 2011 Grand Sport and a 2016 Silverado, both with factory touch screen navigation.

I just received a promotional email encouraging me to purchase a discounted DVD (from GM) to update the Silverado’s navigation.

Is there any chance that the same DVD would work to update the system in the Grand Sport?

How much was the discount?
You could always pop it in and try.

Have serious doubts about that. The C6 is meant to run the navigation system from the DVD. Does the Silverado run in the same manner? I don't think so.

The 2016 nav is not DVD based.

I think that the Navigation updates are tied to the VIN.

0% chance. Not only is the c6 NAV DVD based, they are also married to the VIN.

That is not the case. The DVD contains the database not the OS. But, the DB must be in the correct structure.

Even if it were possible to push an update to the Nav system, I wouldn’t recommend doing it. Most of these Nav units are over a decade old, updating them with newer OS options would likely significantly reduce the performance and responsiveness of the unit.

Think of it like updating the OS on an old IPhone. Never ends well.

I have nav in all my vehicles and never use it. Google maps is your friend. No update required.

That’s not true. If you download the map of the area you are traveling it works without service.

When you buy an update for the navigation system you are not getting OS updated just data for the map itself. HEAR makes the Nav disks for most car manufacturers.

Google maps doesn't require cell phone service (data) if you have downloaded the map of the area you are using.

Adding to this, because the GPS systems in modern phones actually work on GPS data, even when you don’t have cell service the actual turn by turn will still work as will the highlighted line of the roads intended of your path. It’s just the actual advanced visuals of the map that won’t load in most cases. (I.e store names and other google based inputs)

in short, traveling from a Known address to another known address will still function with or without internet connectivity.

Not true. I updated my 2013 GS in 2019 with a e-bay bought GM clone nav update for $10. Worked perfectly. It was the latest/last version. A lot of members here have bought these cloned discs.

Unfortunately the last C6 update was in 2016 and the maps are 2015. You can update the C6 database but not the operating system.

Yup, I was not talking about the operating system, but he could update the maps with the last 2016 version $10 clone as I did. Better than nothing I guess if your still running the oem nav.

Do they still make them? People are too lazy to do it that way and would rather blindly (blondly?) follow the tech...

You mean those paper things, which are outdated before they are even printed?
