My 05 has shut down twice at low speed and seems the car is confused when trying to restart it. From what I have found so far is it is a memory problem. The check engine light comes on but will disappear on the next restart. I had my code reader with me and reads out this code as well as Internal Memory Check Sum Error. Where to start??
I was told only GM can fix this as they need to reprogram the car after they replace the part. Anyone familiar with this??
No GM isn't your only option, but a shop with the ability to reprogram an ECU is needed. Likely a failed ECU (engine computer) is that fauly and after replacing it you
will need to reprogram it. You can get a used one for your car from a salvage yard and have a shop install and program it. Car will likely not start after replacing it
until it is programmed because the security code won't match your cars VIN.
The ECU has failed and GM says it is a back order so hopefully the wait will be short. I will not buy a used electrical part so it seems I will just have to see if they can get it at some point. Any thoughts?
I’m trying to locate a reparable shop on the web to replace my PCM. The two shops I checked have bad reviews on BBB. One quotes you a low ball price to fix your PCM and tells you it can’t be fixed and then hits you with the big ticket price after pulling the payment on the original quote. The other has a similar MO. Before you order anything from a online store it pays to do some homework first to save you from hair pulling BS. If any body has a Legit shop that I can purchase a PCM please let me know.
I should not say I won`t buy a used electrical part but maybe wait for a little while for a new one. Are they programmed from just a VIN number ?
A junkyard ECU with the same part # can be reprogrammed with your cars VIN and any relevant updates by MOST good mechanics that have the ability to program an ECU. You of course take the chance that it will fail. Many salvage yards offer some kind of warranty but it's up to the yard.
I am on a waiting list for one from Rock Auto and as of yet heard from them which is about what I expected because of the supply chain problems. I would call GM with your VIN number to confirm your ECU part number before you buy or order anything. Mine is part number 19210071 but yours could be different. I would be careful about buying a used one from Ebay as the people that list ECU`s on there may or may not know what they are talking about. As far as programing it I am learning as I go and have not got that far. I am going to remove mine this weekend so at least I know what mine looks like. If anyone out there has first hand information on where to get it programmed with a knowledgeable shop for either of us please reach out. GM has told me they will not program an ECU that is not bought from them and they don`t have any nor can they get any. So they are not an option after I get one. I hope this helps.
There are online stores that offer plug and play ( programed before you install) the crank position needs to be learned but sounds like a nice alternative. Just have to find a legit site.
I was talking to a performance shop yesterday that is close by to see if they reprogram ECU`s and after explaining to him on how my car was acting up he told me that it sounds like a bad ground more than an ECU which he said would be rare if it failed. He also said a bad ground would throw that same code so I just wanted to share this information and I am going to start the task of checking and cleaning connections as I have nothing else I can do with no new ECU available at this point. Any suggestions on places to check that are not obvious? Thanks.
Just an update on this. I was lucky to find a used ECU from a salvage yard but it took a little while to find someone that could program it to my car. I was able to locate a shop and it is now running again. This has been a long summer as I was learning as I went. Thanks for all the input.
