I have a 2009 z06 and only have 1 remote programmed to the car. I bought a second used remote but it wont program to the car. Do i have to deprogram the new remote from its previous car so it will work with my car? if so how do i do that? thanks for the help
What fob number is your current fob programmed as? There's a maximum of 4, so if your existing fob is programmed as no. 4, it won't allow any more to be added.
There are 2 different programming procedures. The longer procedure reprograms all the fobs, beginning with no. 1, then the next fob gets programmed as no. 2, etc. All other fobs previously programmed for the car will no longer work on that car.
Yes, the longer procedure deprograms the recently acquired fob and reprograms it for your car.
You need to provide a bit more detail.
First thing I’d try would be the short procedure, because this will either tell you you’ve reached the max number of fobs, or allow you to at least try the used fob in the slot, so-
Can you get the car into programming mode by turning the trunk key 5 times within 5 seconds?
Any messages on the DIC if that’s successful?
If you get a message telling you to insert the next fob, what happens if you do that?
If you’ve got to the above point and nothing happens when you insert the used fob, maybe the fob is defective. How do you know if it’s functional?

thanks, what are the steps to do the long procedure?

I guess it’s been stated numerous times, but the fobs don’t get programmed or deprogrammed. Nothing in the fob is changed. What does happen is that the fob’s electronic id gets inserted into a memory slot in the car’s electronics. Then the car will communicate with it. And, if the donor car that contributed the used fob is still in service, and the long procedure hasn’t been done on the donor car to erase all known fobs, that used fob would still work with the donor car as well as the OP’s car even if the OP is successful with either of the two procedures.
Having said that, if the OP tries the long procedure and it fails part way through, then he could end up with no recognized fobs. Maybe first try adding in the used fob with the short procedure to see if that works. The long procedure could then be done later. My .02
