Default Inside tidbit

A friend of mine got an email at work today from an engineer working on the vette. He was requesting a scale that will go under the floor mat, which has to function accurately under continuous loads up to 250 lbs. My only thought is that it's part of the sensor system for the airbag deployment system. They vary deployment force based on occupant weight. But 250 seems a little low, because they usually want to measure well past the max passenger weight, with easily excedes 250. Also, I would have expected it under the seat, not the mat. I'm guessing they put one under the mat, and one under the seat, to find out an accurate total weight, and weight distrubution. He said it has to be able to interact with a computer, so this all makes sense. Didn't say if it was for production though. Could just be data aquisition for development. Just thought I'd pass it on.

could also be an enhancement to the way the systems calculate a danger condition for the Active Handling...drastic shifts in momentum result in significant shifts in weight on the floor, stuff like that...

hope it won't deploy the airbag because of a lead foot... :D

I was just talking with a guy tonight who was telling me about the airbag deployment in a BMW 3 series (the front ws destroyed, only the dirver bag was depployed). BMW differs from [all?] other cars in the way it deploys passenger airbags only if there is at least 45lbs of weight in the seat. In addition, it deploys the bag against the windshield so the passenger gets a "bounced" bag instead of the full force of the deployment.

Those Germans think of everything...ok, ALMOST everything.
