Default Shift csble question (not broken)

After washing/detailing the car today I decided to take it out for a quick spin tonight. While stopped at a light I pulled it down into S and wanted to use the paddle shifter for a bit of fun. I got to wondering, I know when moving the actual shifter that the cable also moves…..my question is, when using the paddles to shift, does the cable still move as it would in drive or is it shifted somehow electronically?

The shift cable has an outer housing and steel inner wire. The steel inner wire is the part that moves. There are grommets at the end of the wire that attach to the shifter (the part you move), and the shift lever on the the transmission that gets moved when you move the shifter. The paddles don't move anything in the shift cable. They send electronic signals to the computer that controls the transmission.
