Long tube or short tube? Pros and cons of both. Base 05.

It depends on what you want the car to do. This link might help get you pointed in a direction.

Short vs long tube headers.

Just a street car. I put a Hooker cat back on it a couple of years ago. Time for the headers now. Long tube is what I put on my old Chevelle's so why not go with that I guess.

Shortys are a waste of money and theres a good chance you will not get any gains with them. Go with longtubes and run cats if you're worried about emissions, easy 25-40hp with a tune and the noise is fun too.

in California, no dice on the long tubes. shorty's or stock manifolds only. from what I could find out, the state feels that having LTH's, didn't let the cat's get hot enough too, operate properly (as the increased surface area, allowed for more cooling of the exhaust gas).
If you leave any place else, I'd say go with the long tubes.

I did the ZR1 exhaust manifolds, cats and X pipe, because everything still looks factory and legal, depending on where you live and what the local laws are. Buying all these stock parts was real cheap compared to the cost of headers and I think my guy said I got 12 hp for the manifolds. I used that extra $1000 from the headers for other things. To each his own.

my original intent when i first got my car, was to not touch anything until I had to. as I bought it from the original owner ( 98k miles ), i was just going to drive it until something happened. at 162k miles I had my first issue that, long, long, story short, allowed me to do a cam upgrade.
several months later after, what turned out to be some shoddy mechanic work, on to engine #2 ( crate LS3 ). 1-1/2 yrs later, on to engine #3 ( #2 had a failed oil pump ).
so again, when the warranty runs and if I experience any engines issues, that is when I'll think hard about any upgrades. luckily, in it's stock form, the performance is plenty enough.

Long tube headers it is! just ordered some from Summit Racing. I have had this car for quite a while and it is time to give it a little more bark as they say. Besides the winters are long around here and it gives me a reason to have a cold beverage out in the garage. Thanks for the input.

make sure you get some good gaskets too. i went through a few and found ones that were graphite coated. i can't remember the name though, these seemed to hold really well. taking a quick look on line, it seems that graphite ones, are what most suppliers are offering anyways.
being in California, i do not have this option ( LTH ).
enjoy!
