Hi All, One of my TMPS sensors is bad. I took it to TIRES PLUS, they have done sets of tires on my Corvette and my Ferrari before. No problem. They installed a sensor today but could not get it to relearn. It still reads XX. They told me I would have to take it to the dealer. I called up the dealer and they wanted to charge me $260 for one sensor installed. I also called Tire Kingdom and they also said $260 installed. What are your thoughts?
TIA. Sam

IF RCDLR will not relearn the new TPMS, then wrong year sensor installed in the tire.

On the C6, 2005 to 2009 used one type sensor for USA cars, and it changed to another type in 2010 to 2013 for the USA cars.
Also keep in mind that there are two more sensors for the same year break, used for export models as well.

Short of that, have seen LED build conversions put out enough RF noise to block the signal of the TPMS to the RCDLR as well.

First, the sensor does not need to be installed for it to be mated with the car. Just put it on the ground beside the tire and use the programming tool against the valve stem. This will derisk installing one that doesn’t work.
Second, what specific sensor was actually installed?

I was told it was a Schrader valve that fits my car. Since he couldn’t program it he took it out. I’m wondering if $260 is a fair price for General Motors to do it?

It's possible to replace the TPMS without dismounting the tire. Simply take the tire off the car, break the outside bead and stick a small piece of 2" x 4" scrap in between the bead and the rim. Now you have access to remove the old, and replace with the new.

The last time I had a TPMS sensor replaced at the dealership they had it back to me within 30 minutes, but they have a really good tire guy there. It takes at most 2 minutes to do the sensor relearn procedure. I don’t know what your dealership is proposing to do for the $260, but I assume if it includes a new sensor since the one you had was removed. A GM sensor is around $60 from Rockauto, so figure $100 at the dealership. I’m hearing labor rates of $250 per hour at some dealerships, so their quote seems to be in line with what they charge for stuff these days. It’s still outrageous to my way of thinking. Aren’t there any other options in your area?

As you can see by my replies, so far I called two places that can do it and they were both $260. I am continuing to check other options.

1) get another sensor....20 bucks no-name, 60 bucks ACDelco/Schrader

2) invest in a TPMS relearn tool. Worth the 8 bucks to have in your tool box
Amazon Amazon

3) verify the sensor can be learned by doing it on the ground along with the 3 others.

4) take car or wheel only to a tire shop and have them install new sensor.....shouldn't be much more than 25 bucks labor.

5) reinstall wheel and run a relearn on all 4

Would anyone happen to know the acd # or Schrader # for the sensor I need? The production date of my 2013 G/S is 6/12.

You can get that info from RockAuto.com, gmpartsdirect.com or tpms.com. Just make sure you get a 315mhz sensor.

Mine read XX on the DIC when the batteries were too weak. Maybe you got a "new-old-stock" sensor. I don't believe you described the relearn procedure that was used. After installing new sensors and my tire store resetting them with their tool (I'm not sure of the procedure they used), my sensors no longer read XX but were not indicating the correct pressures after a few miles of driving. So I went back and they did the C6 relearn procedure that I got off YouTube and everything was correct after that.
If similar to my '08, put the car in 'accessory on' mode with the ignition button. Then press and hold the lock & unlock buttons at the same time for a few seconds and the horn should honk once. Then with the relearn tool, trigger the left front - the horn should honk once. Then trigger the right front, horn should honk once, then repeat for right rear and left rear. After the left rear is triggered it'll honk once or maybe twice (I don't recall) indicating the procedure is completed. Good luck.
