My guess is that the center layer of the windshield has a different index of fraction than the glass since it's not glass. That's where you could adjust the index of fraction optimally for the HUD. So to me, there are probably two windshields with the only difference being the plastic middle layer. I doubt that there is that much of a difference between the two.
