Default Options not available

When I press the options button on the dash of my 2005 base model I get a message on the DIC that says options are not available. I have tried with the car not running and the e-brake applied and with the engine off, placed in neutral with the e- brake applied also. Is there something that I am not doing correctly.

Options are only available if the fob you're using was programmed to the car as fob #1 or fob #2.

That information is in your owner's manual.

I am using key fob number 1. I was previously able to modify the personalization settings to to this fob after I purchased the car in November. I did receive a message that no fob was detected and changed the battery.

Are you talking about changing the fob battery, or changing the car battery? If the car battery, how long has it been since it was changed? Sometimes it takes a little time for all the car electronics to get set. We're talking about 20 - 30 minutes I think.

Maybe others here can chime in with suggestions.

I changed the key fob battery. The car battery is about 6-8 months old, I do keep a battery tender on it in between when it gets driven. (Sometimes 2-3 weeks)

The no fob detected message means either the fob needs a new battery, or something nearby was interfering with the fob's signal to the car.

With the car engine not running, try putting that fob in the strip in the glove box, with the buttons on the fob pointed toward the passenger side of the car. Then try to start the car. That process uses the car battery to power the process to start the car instead of it using the fob battery to process the start capability.

If you have to replace the fob battery, get the battery from some place that sells plenty of them, like Walmart. Some new batteries bought in places where they don't sell many of them are not at full charge. A few forum members here have learned that.

I have changed the key fob battery. The car started just fine afterwards. It was just on a whim afterwards that I decided to press the options button and it gave me that message about being unavailable. Is there a relearning process after the key fob battery has been changed?

No. You were just standing in a bad spot or there was something plugged into the electrical outlet in the console. Just something between the car's antenna and the fob. If the car started okay after the fob battery change, it's something else.

Where was the fob when you got that not available message? Were you holding it, or was it in your pocket with something else?

The fob was laying right next to the shifter.

Yes, I received the same message whether the car was running or not.

Sometimes these elctrical gremins can be solved by letting everything reset. I would disconnect the battery both negative and postive and let it sit 10 or 15 minutes to let everything discharge. You could also touch the negative and positive cables together for 10 seconds to discharge the system. Worth a shot and don't forget to index the windows when done.

Once you open or unlock the door, the car 'knows' which fob was used. I doubt that it checks to see if a fob is present when you press the options button. Try pressing the driver # on the driver button on the driver door to switch to profile #2, and see if options are available to change. They should be. Then switch back to driver 1 and try again. If you've got a 2nd fob, you should also try using that. If none of this works, try the battery disconnect and reset as explained above.

This happened to me recently. I tried hitting the unlock button on the remote, then tried to access Options again and it worked. Under normal conditions I do not use the fob, the car unlocks passively when I walk up to it, and when I lock the doors I use the lock button on the door, so I guess the car did not recognize which fob I was using.
