I had to remove my starter on my 2013 427 to replace the inline fused link to the alt. Started great first time, but on the second attempt the started made a grinding noise with no engine turn over. Is it possible that the pictured connector below, which clips to the solenoid is causing the issue? Started seems to be mounted correctly and there are only 23k on the engine. Any thoughts is not the below clip.
I can’t speak to the connector but sounds like starter gear is not engaging the ring gear correctly. Might pull the starter and see what is going on there.
I would check the clearance between the armature of the starter and the teeth on the ring gear. It should be 1/8th inch. You may need to shim it even though it's the same one that came off.

The LS3 has a small inspection plate. It's difficult to reach in there after removing it. I use a piece of bent tubing. I thought the LS7 had the same plate.
It sounds like the bendix is not fully extending or possibly has not retracted. I have some experience with starters on older cars and found this sometimes happens with bad solenoid, or under powered solenoid, or a starter not securely tightened. I don’t think that is the case here. I have not gotten back into it yet. There is a plastic connector that goes into the solenoid - I might not have a good connection. I did get two good starts before this happened. Thanks for responding - very much appreciated.

Everyone was right. I didn’t have the starter snugged down. The first time I did a good start it most likely shook the starter down on the mounting bolts. All on me. Thank you for your time on this.

Getting that starter out and getting enough of the wire to install a new fused link, was about as big of a pain as I would like to undertake. Horrible engineering on how the exhaust and the catalytic converter are configured. I’ve got all the fuses that blew replaced, but my aftermarket radio is not powering up. I replaced the radio fuse and the amp fuse, so one last item.
