Something I feared many years ago happened to me. My 2007 corvette auto trans cable went. I used the car the day before and pulled it into my garage and put it in park. Every gear feels like it’s in neutral. I’m having a flat bed tow it out of my garage to my service station which is 3 miles from my house. I’m hoping it can be pushed out of my garage . It has 32000 miles on it but the plastic over time degraded. Just venting at GM design of the cable!
just to make you feel better, my 08 base is on this 3rd trans cable. I have purchased 4th cable and couple of plastic bushings in case it breaks again.

wow how many miles on your car? This is GM’s flagship sports car! That is terrible. I have to see how to get it out of my garage as it was in park . It’s prob still in park. The flat bed tow truck driver prob is familiar with this issue.
As with ALL vehicles, something is prone to break....... You could reach under the rear of the car and manually put the transmission into neutral. Selector is located on the driver side right behind the exhaust tubing. If you are of any size, you will have to get the car up to get to it though.
Most Tow truck driver know trick to raise the rear and place the park in park, while you are inside and start it, and then puts it in drive so you get into service dept.

What are the part number for those? It hasn't happened to me, yet, I'd like to be prepared.
Same thing happened to our 2001 coupe last year. We got stranded on date night when I was between C6s (sold the ZR1 in 2021 and just drove the C5 all the time). The only C6 we had that was an auto was our 2006, and that got traded in 2008. All three of my other C6s have been manuals. Of course, the manuals aren't without their problems. I've replaced the clutch master cylinder on all three of them including my current 2011 Grand Sport.

As for the cable design: the cable is not so much the issue as the plastic-like ends. Simple solution in my opinion; make end out of a metal alloy. GM dropped the ball on this one!

That looks all too familiar. 55K miles, although I don't think miles has anything to do with it. It's just the aging of the plastic. And in the extreme environment of the Houston area, I'm surprised it lasted this long. I had tailgate latch connections break on my 2002 Silverado twice before I sold it to my brother-in-law.
That happened to me last summer and I fixed it in the park lot I was stuck in. Thanks to the forum I knew what to do! I checked the shifter bushing first and it had broke. I just pulled the shift cable into drive and drove it home to replace the bushing in the garage.
It has32,000 miles and it’s always in my garage. I go very easy from Drive to reverse . It’s prob the age and the Florida heat! Thanks all for the suggestions.
It seems all C5 & C6 all have the same problem, give it time if you haven't experience the broken cable, yours is coming, sorry to say.
Yep. Just like the OEM clutch master cylinder on the manuals. It's not a matter of "if" you have problems, but "when". Dealt with that on two of my prior C6s, so when I got my Grand Sport, I swapped it right away.
A number of posters have mentioned a "broken cable". Does the actual cable itself ever break or is it just the plastic bushings in the two ends that break?
Ok, we hear all the horror stories on the bushings etc, and at miles that are way too low for this to ever happen. It could be from heat, because lack of mileage should not be the issue.
I now have 117,000 miles on my 2006, still on the original bushings and cable. I have inspected these on both ends during the hibernation period, and they still look new.
In case, I do have the bushing kit in my rear hatch compartment, just in case.
