Most likely the shifter cable has become detached from either the tranny end or shifter end due to failure of the nylon bushing. Common enough event. The shift lever at the transmission end can be manually moved but that always sounded to me like a good way to get run over.

same here because im 74 and dont want to be crawling under car. My concern is the tow truck going to be able to get car on truck because it is not out of gear, It will come out of park but able to roll

Tell the towing company the situation. Probably the flatbed operator has seen this before a few times and will know exactly what to do, but verify that by asking questions.

How far do you need to push it? You could get a pair of car dollies. Put them under the rear tires and push it.

Dollies
Thanks that is what I did.Got a pair of Dollie’s . Drive on incline and slant so got my daughter to drive my truck. I attached a nylon strap to car and I guided the back. We got to top of drive and I pushed into garage. Now I’ll jack and see if cable to tranny is connected. Again thanks I completely forgot about dollies
