Default What is this z06 worth?

hello everyone, been a while since ive been in the vette world, having a family will do that i guess.
i have a co-worker that wants to get rid of his corvette. hes had it for 6-7 years i believe. a year after he got it, a lifter started squeaking, so he had the heads re-done, new cam, a BTR stage 3 or 4 if I recall, its quite lopey.
last year he was on the highway and messing around, selected the wrong gear and wrecked the motor. over the last year the local to us, corvette shop was rebuilding the motor "under the table", and did it for around 12k under the table, vs 17 with paperwork. that said, its got 500 miles now on the new motor, and hes done with it. its a 2008 black Z06, forgestar wheels, with approx 41,000 miles on it...no receipts for any of the work done. whats it worth?

To me sounds like the engine work didn't turn out like he planned and is dissatisfied with the car and wants to get out from under it. I would say 20-22k Max, only because the whole motor has to be completely gone over, like full tear-down.

Two things I would have to know in order to come up with a ballpark value are:
1. Does this engine have a genuine GM aluminum LS7 block, and what are the specifics of all the internals?
2. What type of heads are on this engine, and exactly what, if anything, has been done to fix the valve problem?

I agree, low 20s tops. The motor really needs pulled another time and fully gone through from any sort of reliability standpoint, unless buyer likes living on the edge and has deep pockets/doesn't care. The Z06 already is a liability in its stock form, so now with an engine that nobody really knows what's going on it's even more so. On top of that, no receipts on any of the work? Huge red flag from a buyers perspective.

he was wanting to sell it when the motor went this last time as he's put too much into it to enjoy it any longer. the motor is fine he just wanted to get it out of break-in so any test drives could be at full throttle without worry.

these are good questions, any my answers would only be assumptions. i agree about it being suspicious/red flags...

Honestly, 'for the right buyer', this could be a great deal. Get into the details, make sure the engine was done right or be prepared to fix what is not, get it at a great price.

The good news is you actually know the owner (co-worker) and the shop that he had the "under the table" repairs done. You should be able to talk to the co-worker and shop.

Imagine if you didn't know these people, and bought it thinking everything was good on it.

What's the value of a "stock" 2008 Z06 with similar miles?

On autotrader there are 38 - 2008 Z06's for sale with less than 45K miles. The lowest is for sale $34k. The highest are mid $55k but those are really low mileage. The median price seems to be $45k.
So with the engine being suspect, I'd say no more than $30k in case you have drop another $10k for engine repairs.

Best of luck to you.

Paying ~$12k without receipts, what a great decision. Basically the shop said we do crap work & don't stand behind it. Also sounds like your co-worker beat the hell out of the car. My philosophy is to not make someone else's problems my problems, especially when it comes to spending tens of thousands of dollars.

If you buy it I’d plan to have enough money bankrolled if that engine turns into an anchor. Hope for the best plan for the worst.

I would assume almost every Z06 has been beat to hell... Isn't that what they're for?

But I agree, all you need is one nice garage queen to put this thread to rest (but fix the heads when you buy it).

I have a 2008 Z06 from new. I'd sell the car for the right price, but I just can't see selling it for less than what a new POS slower nanny-fest new car offering costs.. So I'll keep mine. I do believe the c6z06 is already at its nadir of about 45K for a good example.

So there is a price point somewhere for any of these cars, no? There's a lot of pretty awesome junk rolling in a C6Z other than the engine. I'd say maybe call it 25K for a sweet roller is the base and add to that whatever the engine is worth?? This one seems like it's not worth much,

It would be a hard pass on any amount since there is no paper trail what was installed.
Maybe all parts are sub standard? Is it a junkyard rebuild or even any kind of rebuild?

Ditto on this, since when motor goes, you need to change all oil lines, the oil tank and even the oil cooler. Hence metal goes through them, and no way to get it fully out to begin with, and what is left in these parts after you have tried t get it all out intialy, will make it back into the new engine.

Then the fact that he is selling the car with only 500 miles on the motor, screaming that there is a problem with the motor and trying to dump the car while the motor is at least still running.
