Okay so right now my 06 is getting a new HB by Powerbond. The tech called and said the old one came off by hand! Apparently they're supposed to be tight.
My question is: Is this going to be an issue even with the new HB? Is the metal at the end of the crank worn? Is that possible? The guy didn't seem overly
concerned and said he just wanted to keep me in the loop. Should I be concerned?

You don't say if you observed "wobble" on the original HB, but if so, that may have caused vibration that backed out the bolt a bit & allowed the pulley to come loose. In any case, should not be a problem provided the tech is using a new ARP bolt with the replacement.
If you're still concerned, you can ask to have the HB "pinned" which is not a difficult procedure nor expensive for a qualified tech.

It did wobble. And they are using an ARP bolt. I appreciate the input.

Not sure how using an ARP bolt versus a factory bolt makes any difference on an HB staying put. Never heard that.

In your case, I would be inclined to pay a little extra to have it pinned to the crank.

Proper torque is critical and I'd definitely use the ARP bolt and washer. Also, for added security have it pinned given how loose it apparently was according to your tech. Pinning is cheap and cheap insurance as well. Will prevent movement on the crank.

The pulley came off by hand or the bolt came out by hand?

If the pulley spins freely on the crank snout, the hub I.D. is trashed or the crank O.D. is trashed or both. It's supposed to be a several thou interference fit. Mic both before proceeding.

The original balancer should definitely not be able to pull out by hand. Hopefully the damage was just on the pulley and not the crank. The more important question is if the new balancer required to be pressed on. If the they just put the new balancer by hand, you are looking for trouble down the road.
