Default Headlight lens issue

Has anyone ever experienced this? Looks like there is a coating on the OEM lens and it delaminated. Can this be buffed out?

No. It appears the lens was previously clear coated (for lens correction or protection). Only answer is sand off the applied clear coat and respray or install new lens.

Try some heat and try to peel it off first. What’s to lose?

That’s what I was thinking also, probably ceramic coated when the car was done - thanks for the reply!

headlight lens
it appears someone has put a coating on the lens. It can be buffed off. 3m makes a kit with several wipes in it to recoat the lens. If your car is driven on a regular basis they recommend a redo or refresh every 6 months. It may be peeling due to age. Or someone has buffed it off not realizing there was a coating on the lens. The 3m product is durable but it will come off if polished or buffed.

If it turns out you need new lenses talk to RLSeibring on this site. He sells a complete set of lenses and all necessary hardware to replace the lenses yourself for about $400 for the pair. Just did mine and came out beautifully.

I did my own before I bought the Morimoto's and they were a lot of work, but they looked great.

Those lenses don't look like they need replacing. I would start with solvents, then go to abrasives if no success. Good luck.

That may be a failure of the plastic. When Umnitza came out with the lenses for the C6, I was on the preorder list and received a set from that original batch. Out of those first three batches, they had a handful (< 1%) that had this behavior. Mine is pictured below a year after putting them on the car. Starting with batch four and beyond, they had zero failures like this for over 2000 lenses. That was nearly 4 years ago. I would try the sanding and polishing recommended and if that doesn't work, I'd get new lenses.

Our latest batch is set to arrive, the batch has extra protection against this and we're upping the warranty as a result to 2 years on them.

The headlight lens crazing is a very common issue with C6 cars, there are polishes that will bring back the lens temporarily but the only real fix is new headlight covers. Umnitza & rlsebring sell the replacement lenses

My original owned 2013 did this after about 5 years so I know nobody messed with the headlights. That is the OEM protective coating coming loose.

you can finish buffing the finish off the lens and complete a new 3m wipe off unit. It will last about 3 to 6 months regular use. The 3m kit has amount wipes to last a year or more.

Yep, that's exactly what happens, the original coating can fail after many years. Most C6 owners have faced, or will have to face this if they keep the car long enough. No one way to deal with bad head light lenses, you will get differing reports on results of the various methods and lots of opinions, some much more valid than others.

Three good ways to fix it:

1) Sand off all the coating and spray with clear.
2) Sand off all the coating and polish the lens to a clear finish.
3) Replace the lens.

A couple of ways to half *** it:

4) Attempt a spot polish repair
5) Apply some kind of magic coating touted to fix bad head lights.

And the nuclear option:

6) Replace the head light.

Personally, I chose option 3) using RL Sebring lenses and am very pleased with the result.

Good luck, let us know what you end up doing and how it works out for you.
