I was replacing the infamous bushing on the shifter end of the cable and snapped the jacket that surrounds the inner cable. Is it imperative that you have to replace the complete cable? If so, why? Is it because of lack of support to the inner cable and the inner cable could bend, not allowing the shifter to move the inner cable correctly?

Generally speaking, yes. The outer covering provides a stiff resistance for the flexible cable to operate. No problem when you pull the cable, but it will normally deform & bend when pushing it as the transmission lever will provide resistance. Remember the example of the Bowden cable from your school physics class.
Do you have a picture of what was broken? I think you are talking about the shielding that protects the cable but I am not sure.
Yep, the shielding on the shifter box end of the cable. From what I've seen on Youtube you have to replace the cable assembly because eventually the inner wire will bend due to lack of shielding support. Dang, this is going to be a long weekend.
Take a picture of what you're talking about. F you're saying you broke a piece of the shielding off inside the cabin of the car, but the cable itself is fine.... I'd run that still.
The outside shielding is basically a protective conduit that allows the inside cable to move inside it. A small piece missing inside the car is unlikely to har thing unless it creates tension on the inner cable.
Job complete. Took me 2 hours with my friends lift. The most difficult part was putting the connector on the shifter end in the flange area. I had to connect it from the inside of the car since the console was removed earlier. Made it much easier. Also, don't forget to snap the rear connector together while in neutral after removing the red connector. I forgot too and had to snap it together when I got home LOL. Tools that made the job easier; Lift, Milwaukee 1/4" impact, long forceps, screwdriver, sockets, universal and a nice bright flashlight. Very clean under my car Nice clean bottom 36 bolts baby.
