Default Shift **** help

My shift **** is a bit worn and the plastic top piece broke so I got a new shift **** to put in.

When I removed my old **** there was a plastic piece on the end of the **** that isn’t there on my new ****, it also looks like there is a plastic piece in the boot which this piece fits into

Picture of my new **** which doesn’t have the piece that fits into the sleeve in the boot.

do I remove the piece from my old ****? If so how? I bloodied my fingers trying to remove it from the old **** and couldn’t figure it out. Hopefully this make sense. A bit frustrated at the moment.
can anyone shed some light. Thanks

If my memory serves me, you have to pull down on the top trim ring, immediately under the leather, and twist the **** to the 1 o'clock position and pull up.
I just found a PDF that explains it.
