Gas smell
Since I’ve been on this forum around a couple years now, I see a lot posted about the gas smell issues. I am wondering, if you take off the front wheel well of the rear left wheel, can you see the fuel tank and more specifically the top of the tank? Secondly, has anybody try an old school technique of cleaning the cracked elbow and applying JB weld for plastic and covering the elbow completely? This all depends on seeing the top of the tank for sure. I know this might be completely different and ridiculous but you never know until you try. Just a thought.

Nope, no access to it from that direction, the only way to access it is to drop the tanks. No shortcuts I'm affraid. That being said this is a horribly overblown issue the last few months. Very small number of cars effected or having the issue. Cross the bridge if and when you get there.

Yes, I agree with Stock's statement. My car is going into a local performance shop next month to have the fuel pump replaced because of the gas smell. No big deal to me, it's just part of maintenance that has to be done on the car.

I wouldn't say it's an overblown issue. It affected enough cars that GM issued a 10 yr / 120k mi extended coverage to fix it free of charge. Knowing GM, if it was an insignificant number of cars they would have just ignored it.
That said, it appears to he a fairly easy fix on manuals but a PITA on autos from what I've read.

When I purchased my 2011 two years ago, I filled up and got the smell. Researched it and have come to the conclusion that I will not fill my tank full from then on out...... So far So good

what is the cause for it and why does not filling up all the way solve the issue?

When the fuel level is less than half, only the left tank has fuel, and no fuel is pumped from the right tank, so no fuel goes through that plastic elbow and there is no leakage. The issue is not solved - this is just a stop gap measure.

The TSB & extended coverage was for all 2007-2013 Corvettes as well as certain Cadillac XLRs.

When i purchased my '12 in '19, I was pretty sure it had the cracked elbow issue becuase the gas smell was there after filling it up. I was driving it more frequently than I do currently, therefore filling it up at least once a week. The gas pumps will click off just as the tank is completely full and most of the time I would spill a little bit of gas. If you have ever tried to top off you will know what I mean. After stopping this practice and making sure I didnt spill any gas, wiping up any that did... no more gas odor issues.

They're just another "controversy creates clicks" outfit thinking they're gonna drive engagement from people in the know saying false info, and gather a following from people who don't know by making them feel informed.
