Default Gas smell

Since I’ve been on this forum around a couple years now, I see a lot posted about the gas smell issues. I am wondering, if you take off the front wheel well of the rear left wheel, can you see the fuel tank and more specifically the top of the tank? Secondly, has anybody try an old school technique of cleaning the cracked elbow and applying JB weld for plastic and covering the elbow completely? This all depends on seeing the top of the tank for sure. I know this might be completely different and ridiculous but you never know until you try. Just a thought.

Nope, no access to it from that direction, the only way to access it is to drop the tanks. No shortcuts I'm affraid. That being said this is a horribly overblown issue the last few months. Very small number of cars effected or having the issue. Cross the bridge if and when you get there.

Yes, I agree with Stock's statement. My car is going into a local performance shop next month to have the fuel pump replaced because of the gas smell. No big deal to me, it's just part of maintenance that has to be done on the car.

Default Video that addresses C6 Gas Smell problem

Check out this video from Lyle at C & S Corvette in Florida. The video addresses this gas smell issue on C6.

I wouldn't say it's an overblown issue. It affected enough cars that GM issued a 10 yr / 120k mi extended coverage to fix it free of charge. Knowing GM, if it was an insignificant number of cars they would have just ignored it.

That said, it appears to he a fairly easy fix on manuals but a PITA on autos from what I've read.

So if I'm understanding that video this fuel smell issue only started on the 2007-2008 and newer C-6's?

No short cuts for the proper fix, you have to remove basically the entire rear drive train to gain access to the fuel tanks

When I purchased my 2011 two years ago, I filled up and got the smell. Researched it and have come to the conclusion that I will not fill my tank full from then on out...... So far So good

Same here...I always wondered if/when that gas leak bug would affect my car, hopefully one thing to cross off the list!

The TSB & extended coverage was for all 2007-2013 Corvettes as well as certain Cadillac XLRs.

Don't take a thing that C&S Corvettes says seriously. They're buffoons.

what is the cause for it and why does not filling up all the way solve the issue?

C6 Corvettes have two "saddle" gas tanks, one behind and to the left of the driver and one behind and to the right of the passenger. Each tank holds about 9 gallons. Fuel is exchanged between them through a crossover pipe. The cause of the issue is (most commonly) a plastic elbow at the top of the fuel pump unit, which is on the top of the left tank. The plastic degrades, the elbow cracks, and fuel leaks onto the top of the tank and down the sides.

When the fuel level is less than half, only the left tank has fuel, and no fuel is pumped from the right tank, so no fuel goes through that plastic elbow and there is no leakage. The issue is not solved - this is just a stop gap measure.

I watch a lot of videos from C&S and I've seen you trash them before. Why?

Thank you for the link...so I'm guessing either GM wanted to get away as cheaply as possible by only including as few years as possible or the '05 and '06 weren't affected, maybe they had different fittings. I always keep my tank full and have never had any smell, I'll deal with it when/if it happens.

When i purchased my '12 in '19, I was pretty sure it had the cracked elbow issue becuase the gas smell was there after filling it up. I was driving it more frequently than I do currently, therefore filling it up at least once a week. The gas pumps will click off just as the tank is completely full and most of the time I would spill a little bit of gas. If you have ever tried to top off you will know what I mean. After stopping this practice and making sure I didnt spill any gas, wiping up any that did... no more gas odor issues.

Because their videos are wrong or misleading and they have a terrible reputation with people who either know what they're talking about, or are local to them.

They're just another "controversy creates clicks" outfit thinking they're gonna drive engagement from people in the know saying false info, and gather a following from people who don't know by making them feel informed.
