I read in the latest HOT ROD magazine that GM actually does have versions of the new automatic (5 or 6 speed, i dont remember) that can handle over 500 lb-ft of torque.

The new six speed is to be developed in joint with ford and is to be used in a wide range of applications including performance vehicles. So it sounds like this is a definite yes for the vette it is also supposed to come out on production vehicles 2004 ish :smash: :cool:

Just wanted to add a few things. People keep mentioning the Ford-GM
collaboration on a 6-speed automatic trans. for FRONT WHEEL applications.
While that's nice and indicates GM is moving towards 6-speed automatics,
it has little to do with C6 directly. What I have been posting is related to
REAR wheel drive applications. Here's another version of the Automotive
News article. By the way, as with the Gen IV engine, just because plant
A is scheduled to be upgraded and start producing a part for C6 doesn't
mean that it is the only place or even the first place to produce such a
part.

There's a really nice GM slideshow from Tom Stephens in Powertrain.
I posted it yesterday and it mentions these transmissions as well as the
3V, Gen IV engine. Maybe everybody thinks it's the same slideshow that
was posted a while ago?? It's not.

Can you say "optional paddle shifter"? I really think this would be the main reason to give a 6 rather than 5 speed auto. Any ideas? Forgive my tranny ignorance, but I assume that a paddle shift tranny would resemble the architecture of an automatic more than a manual.
