Hey, so I ended up crossthreading one of my O2 sensors and was wondering what the best option is from here? Should I use a tap on the threads and if so any recommendations on the tap I use?
Chamfer start of threads to remove the damaged threads with chamber tool just large enough to remove the threads themself/ not chamfer the outside of the bung as well, then run a tap to clean up the rest.
Without chamfer to remove the screwed up first few threads, tap may not bit clean to bottom threads as it starts to engauge, and just screw up all the threads instead.
If the threads don't clean up and since it's off the car, you can consider taking it to a shop and having a new bung installed or you could use a Timesert on it https://www.timesert.com/
Eyeballing the photo it looks like you're going to have 3 good threads and 1 "ok" thread. I'd think hard about the Timesert. I'm sure there will be a variety of opinions. This is mine.
Most auto stores carry and M18x1.5 thread tap for oxygen sensors. I’ve used them in the past with success but that depends on how much of the original thread is left.
Looks to me like there was some galling of the threads, this can usually caused by the lack of anti-seize being put on the threads when it was installed, after you get it cleaned up, be sure to use some anti-seize before installing the new one.
