I have been having a ticking sound which i believe was to be a lifter. But today i was driving around and something weird happened, after i had shifted into 2nd the car hesitated and almost died but didnt and i noticed a significant loss of power and that slight ticking sound became almost like a rattling knocking sound and im pretty sure its the lifter. Can having a lifter go out cause this. Im going to pull the valve covers off and start looking into the problem immediately. Any of you guys have this ever happen before. What should i do and what might i expect. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated right now. As i am not very happy with my situation because it looks like i will have to start taking stuff apart again on this thing.

FWIW, this has absolutely no bearing on the incident but food for thought: the engine in my wife's BMW X5 dropped a valve last weekend. Of course, aside from the gawd-awful noise, it stopped running, so that was my first big hint.
