Default Problems after A6 Shift **** install

Hello All,

I got up this morning and thought I would put on my new shift **** that I bought a couple of weeks ago. The install went reasonably well it took me about an hour or so to get the new **** on, it was a pain but it's on and looks and works great.

I started the car after the install to let it run a bit. I shut it down and this message came on the DIC screen saying " Shift to Park". It was in park already. I started the car again and went to shut it down and the same thing. I move the shifter and apply the brake and I hear the solenoids fire OK and it will start in park and in neutral, but when I shut the car down the message says the same thing, and when I shut the engine off the ignition the car goes immediately goes to accessory mode and I can't turn it off.

By this time the battery is getting week and it is 5 years old so I go pick up a new one and install it. Now when I try to start the car the car goes black all lights shut off and the radio goes black and the engine light on the dash lights up and it will not turn over at all.

I replaced the shifter harness and micro switch's 2 years ago. It now has a new battery that I installed today. I had to unhook the battery to shut down the car. I will get the code reader out tomorrow and check for codes.

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Try nudging the shifter forward, there a mico switch in there that it needs to activate so the car knows it's in park. See this thread. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...n-message.html this thread if you want to order a new switch, or you could just try bending the little tab out on your existing switch which would be a quick fix.. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ring-info.html

madsonp,

Thanks for the reply, that was one of the first things I checked. When moving the shifter to park from neutral (engine running) the shift to park dic message came up, I pushed the shifter forward and around, still dic message was lit shift to park. At that time the car would start in park or neutral telling me that the switches were working. (I could also hear the solenoid fire when I stepped on the brake petal when in park) (I suppose that the front switch could have completely failed, but I would think that would be pretty rare)

I feel like now my original problem has merged into another issue, now I can not turn off accessory mode and have to remove the battery connections to shut the power down to the car or it wound drain the battery. When try to start the car, everything goes black and the engine light turns on, power will restore in about 20 seconds.

Since you just changed the shift **** and the message came up immediately after you changed it maybe go back through the install and make sure everything is fine. Maybe the button or something else is not quite right. When you disconnect the battery to shut the car down have you left it disconnected for awhile to let everything reset?

I recently changed my shift **** and had the same problem. I checked your profile and I see you have a 2008. Try this to get the message to stop and to get everything working properly again.

This is from Lyle at C&S Corvettes. I bought a shift **** from them, that I highly recommend!!

IF YOU HAVE A 2006 THROUGH 2008 CORVETTE, YOU MUST READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLING YOUR NEW SHIFTER ****

While GM didn't change the shifter ****'s internal structure at all between 2006 and 2013, they did change the shape of the pintal sticking up out of the shifter itself. If you are installing our new **** onto an 06-08 car, you may need to slightly trim the pintal down a bit. IF you have an issue with the car not going into park (getting a “shift to park” alert on your instrument cluster screen) after the installation of the new ****, do the following:

First and easiest way to solve the issue: Fully install the **** and lock the shifter boot into its place. Once that is done, pull upwards on the **** firmly for a count of three. Try the shifter again to see if it now actuates correctly. This works about 80% of the time.

If it does NOT, there is a simple and workable solution. Let me explain...

--The tiny plastic pintal at the top of the shifter is a slightly different shape on the 06-08 shifters than it is on the 09-13 units.

If your shifter looks like picture #1, you may need to file that plastic tip down with an emory board or file or Dremel to eliminate the point at the top. We do this here at the shop and it works flawlessly. It basically comes down to removing a tiny bit of the plastic tip so that the locking pawl can contact the microswitch and tell the car that it is secure.

Thanks so much for your replies!!!!

uncled20, gets FIRST PLACE!!

You were absolutely correct, I did buy a C&S Shift **** and that was hands down the issue, I did send C&S an email telling of the issue on Saturday, so I will probably hear from them on Monday.

I had 2 issues, in ran the battery down and removed the battery connections which enabled the anti-theft system. I put the new battery in and allowed the system to reset. Then I removed the C&S **** and shifted the car to park. NO MORE SHIFT TO PARK message. I started the car several times with no ****, No problems no message. I then started the car in park 1 more time. This time I pushed the shifter pintle down about 2mm (shift **** removed) and shut the engine down SHIFT TO PARK was displayed in the DIC, I then let off of the pintle and the message went out!!

So the C&S **** was keeping the pintle down enough to cause the DIC issue and think it was not it park. Just to keep my sanity today because of the day long Saturday issue I installed the old shift ****. I may install the new C&S **** next week and file down the pintle but today I need to rest!!

I feel that I have a PHD in shift **** install now so I will be posting a full write up next week!! There are very few videos or write up on the subject that are CORRECT.

Thanks again for EVERYONES replies!!

This is literally the solution. Just had the same issue and Chris from C&S told me how to handle it.

Default Update

Update, I did get an email from Lyle at C&S that had the exact instructions as above. He told me that the instructions should have been in the box. I bought the **** at Corvette Expo a couple of weeks ago and there were no instructions in the box. All is well.

I think they missed all the instructions. I bought mine at his shop in Sarasota, Chris also said there should have been instructions in the box. But hey, atleast they are super responsive and super nice. Everyone is entitled to make mistakes. And the **** is great quality!
