DOD
General Motors has announced their high-tech fuel-saving Displacement On Demand system will go first into the 2005 GMC Envoy XL, Envoy XUV and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
Displacement on Demand will be a standard feature in the vehicles' optional Vortec 5300 V-8 engine. The more efficient engine will boost the fuel efficiency of these vehicles by about 8 percent (based on an EPA testing procedure).
GM will also use this technology as part of a new overhead-valve V-6 family of engines in some 2006 mid-size passenger cars. By 2008, more than two million vehicles with the V-8 and V-6 engines will feature Displacement on Demand.
DOD means that some of the cylinders actually shut off during operation where they aren't needed, and it saves a whole lot of fuel.
