Default December Corvette Fever

From C6 Registry:
Did anyone else get their December Corvette Fever yet? On page 10, they quote Gary Cowger, president GM Engines North America as saying:

"First, it will be more powerful. In baseball terms-and this is a quiz-think about Ted Williams' unmatched feat from 1941: his batting average. Second, it will have a more athletic stance: a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs. For the first time since 1962, it will have fixed headlamps. Unlike the traditional pop-ups, this will allow the use of modern, high-technology lighting. You'll notice the Corvette badge is a bit different as well, trimmer and more athletic to match the stance of the car itself."

I looked up Ted's batting average in 1941: 406!
Nothing new here, but it is the first time that I have seen this HP in print, in a mag.

406HP base sounds good. 406CI would be even better :D

I was / am lusting for 435HP, but I'm just a sentimental fool. I'm sure that my C6 will be at 435HP within a year of purchase. Thanks in advance aftermarket.

406 HP isn't even a very marketable number. People like nice, even numbers that are multiples of two or five. I bet that he was hinting that it would be AROUND 406 horsepower.

Default Nobody would claim exactly 406 horsepower.

Hello, 406 > 405.

In other words, C6 has more power than C5 Z06.

How is the significance of the claim lost on so many?

Sadly, no. I had to cut back on my magazine subscriptions. It was down to "Corvette Fever" or "Cosmopolitan" and I just don't know what I'd do without 101 Fabulous Sex Tips and Celeb Couple Dirt.

As for the C5 Z06 owners... preserving their pride makes GM money how, exactly?

Hello, 406 > 405.

I thought about that... but after five years, who's going to be comparing the two anyway?

Just about every person who owns either model. :-)
At least every one who's a member here...

It's not so easy to throw in a higher displacement engine unless you can make a strong business case for it. We have, for instance, a long enough hood to contain a V-12. Now to actually get, a V-12, it would need to be able to be used somewhere else in the corporation. Like in the Escalade.
Escalade is getting one, and it seems as though Cadillac has become our mentor, so...

Yeah, but look at some of the imports coming out... 469 for the MB E55-AMG; 493 for the SL55-AMG, 238 for the Mazda RX8, and 333 for an M3. Not all that far out of line.

V12? I was talking about more displacement, not more cylinders. :-) We're just getting to 6 liters... a V8 can probably go out to 8 liters comfortably. (Not the same block, obviously.) The old warhorse bigblock update Vortec 8100 is 8.1 liters. I'd rather see a new Gen IV type big block under the hood of a Corvette before a V12. Of course, I'd rather see us get all the torque we can out of the small block first. Why add weight to the front end when you don't have to?

And how do you figure we have a long enough hood for a V12?

Maybe the new W-12 similar to the VW engines would fit lengthwise. :yesnod:

The current Gen III and probably Gen IV can go to 7.4lt according to "Corvette from the Inside". Just recently, Katech built one for a Hot Rod editor. I've got the article somewhere around here.

GM built several really big block aluminum V8s for CanAm racing several years ago. You can get some right now as crate engines. There are several C5s running around with them under their hood. Strictly off road of course.

No V12 on Hill's watch. He's said so on several occasions. That engine configuration just doesn't seem appropriate for anyone but Ferrari to put in a front engined sports car. Certainly, DC didn't in the SLR although AMG did in one version of the SL. Twin turbocharged too. And DC uses one in the SL600. A British writer called the front engine DC V12 cars, point and squirt cars, get them a round a corner, point them down the straight and then "squirt" to the next corner.

GM has been working on packaging for their engines in the XV versions that we've seen. Even the V16 fits in one of their big SUVs. Got a picture of that somewhere around here too. The Katech giys did the install and drove it around a bit and then GM took over. The article says the stories coming out of GM on what happended to that vehicle are almost beyond belief. Reportedly, Lutz among others drove it! Packaging isn't the issue, but presentation is. GM could fit the coming V12 in a Vette. In fact they may put it in the XLR.

I'm with you, for the Vette, lots of CI in a V8 is just fine.

That's me too. My L71 was quite a kick back then. It would pull the redlines in top gear that my FI 327 wouldn't. However today's 350 HP LS1 will outrun it. Nevertheless, get busy aftermarket. Oh heck maybe just 3 valve heads.

no, they are not the problem... it's them stupid arsed super-bluez that the kids are putting in their civic... :mad

The Xenon/HID's have a very soft center, whereas the super-bluez are harsh and annoying.
