3V engine
find industry media on the web that cater to the industry rather
than the consumer. They'll be more informative and more accurate.
1) US patent & trade office ( http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html )
____ Notice that the green rectangle is for Issued patents while
____ the yellow is only for ones that have not yet been issued.
____ Use the quick search and type in things like "internal combustion"
____ in field 1 and set that to Abstract. In field 2, try "general motors
____ corporation" associated with Assignee Name and then hit search and
____ wait awhile. What you'll see is
____ ABST/"internal combustion" AND AN/"general motors corporation"
____ To narrow this if you're looking for 3V engine stuff, maybe try
____ ABST/"internal combustion" AND AN/"general motors corporation" AND ABST/valve
____ Once you've found something interesting, look for who this guy/gal
____ cites and then who has cited him or her. Practice makes perfect.
2) SAE website ( http://www.sae.org/servlets/index )
____ Use the search tool at the upper left-hand-side to type in
____ things like " direct injection AND gasoline " but without the
____ quotes. Logical words like AND and OR must be capitalized. Also, try words
____ like corvette or LS1.
3) Magazines:

4) GOOGLE ( http://www.google.com )
Let's say we want to learn about the new GM six speed automatic transmissions.
Try typing in (quotes mean the words must appear contiguously)
"six speed" automatic transmission GM -ZF
"6 speed" automatic transmission GM -ZF
The -ZF is to remove hits about the new ZF transmissions. Since we know
that we only want rear drive cases, try
"six speed" "automatic transmission" GM -ZF rear
"6 speed" "automatic transmission" GM -ZF rear
Since they are likely to show up in 2005, try
"six speed" "automatic transmission" GM -ZF rear 2005
"6 speed" "automatic transmission" GM -ZF rear 2005
Also, since we know that prototypes were called the X13R, X14R,
X15R, and X16R - try those
X15R GM
When I wanted to learn about future GM DI engines, I wanted serious
documents like pdf files. I also guessed the engines might come on
line in 2006 or 2007 once the sulfur was out of the gasoline.
