Just had a 3 hour private tour through the Corvette plant last week. Saw the new Cadilacs being built too. There was a pair of C6 doors being built by about 5 or 6 engineers on the line. They tried to cover them to hide the lines but didn't do a good job and I saw some door skins anyway and also some rear hatch surrounds for the C6 coupe. Got to start a couple of just finished cars for the first time at the end of the assembly line. Pretty neat day, especially when you combine it with 65 degree sunny afternoon and empty highway on the back roads for the trip back to Indy.
I just returned from a week long vacation which took me through Bowling Green on Monday Nov 3rd. I took the plant tour, which was really cool, and noticed a couple of strange things.
1. At one of the early stations before the body panels go on what I'm calling the frame, there was a white coupe with the rear window already intact but completely covered with masking tape. This appeared to be prior to putting on the rear end, doors or front body panels. The interesting thing is the front section of the frame was visible, and noticeably lower and wider then the rest of the production cars being built around it. Also, I'm able to identify the difference between the three versions, Vet, Coupe, and Z06 at this stage, and this wasn't any of them. I asked the nice young lady tour guide about the car at the tour's next stop, but she dismissed me by saying that she didn't see it.
2. When we got to the stage where they put on the wheels, they had complete tires on 17 inch standard C5 rims. But on the rack where the wheels are stored, there were two tires mounted to 18 inch 5 spoke rims painted black. I couldn't get close enough to see the tires size, but it looked to be roughly the same as the C5 rims. Luckily the tour stopped just after this stage, and I asked the girl about the black rims. She told me I must have been seeing the inside of the rim which would look dark. I turned and pointed at the visible rims which we could see from where we were standing, but she stuck to her story that we were looking at the back of the rim.
Not any big news, but some strange happenings that I wanted to share.
