We've all been guessing and arguing over how much HP the new base vette is going to have...GM and insiders have been giving us interesting hints such as "Think Four and Five" and "Ted Williams batting average"...but I just saw Car&Driver TV and they previewed the SS concept which got me thinking.
The SS concept car has a Gen3 aluminum 6.0-liter V-8 engine pushing 430 horsepower and 430 lbs.-ft. of torque. Could this be the engine we're going to see? If they can produce an engine w/ the same displacement as the C6, and have the HP up around 430...why push it down to 405 as many claim?
With modern engines, there is only a very weak link between engine size, peak power, and EPA fuel economy. Look at Z06 - more power and shorter gearing, yet it achieves the same EPA fuel economy numbers as C5 Coupe and Convert.
During the EPA emission certification test, which is where EPA fuel economy numbers are derived, all cars are driven according to the same speed-time schedule and shifted at the same speed unless the manufacturer has some type of shift assist function. In the case of C5 (and probably C6) the 1-4 skip shift helps achieve good EPA numbers, and this is the only reason it's there. During this certifcation process the throttle is barely cracked open and revs likely never exceed 2500.
EPA fuel mileage is driven primarily by weight and aero. That's why all C5s get 18/28, which is well above the guzzler threshold. Expect C6 to exceed these number by 1 MPG, and C6 Z06, even with a 6.4L 500 HP engine will be no worse than C5.

Whaddya guys think?
This is a :_dupe: We have beaten to death the SS Concept talk.
My guess is it will be around "405" Already done that in the Z06 so it's in the can already!
The new Z06 will be higher....maybe around 430
No way. If the Z06 has 430hp and the coupe/conv have 400-405 the Z06's will sit on the dealer's lots until they rot. If GM has much less than a 40-50hp difference in the two engines they are in for trouble with the Z06.
