That steering wheel is pretty much lifted from the Malibu/Equinox interior (I dont know which is which)--it's pretty obvious. While its not an exact "rip" it has very similar styling cues, and ugly ones at that. 3 "spoke" wheel designs are much better. Most race drivers use the 3 spoke wheel, which does say a lot.
I'm sorry but who gives a flying f'uck if there are controls on the wheel? You want climate controls and audio controls on a car that most of America will be driving in the summertime with the top off or the top down? I can't remember the last time I wished for buttons and dials inlaid into the facade of my steering wheel... that's just the thing I want my shirt to catch on, or my hands to slip on when I'm focusing all my attention on the road ahead of me.
If you're too lazy to reach over and burn two calories with your right arm, you definately shouldn't be driving a sports car. That's why God created Mercedes.
Most mass-market sports cars and sports sedans have steering wheel controls for the A/V system and the cruise control. Those controls never are pushed by accident. GM has those wheels in their parts bin already, so no development cost would be incurred. Obviously, the designers attempted to design a wheel that is exclusive to the vette, but missed it terribly.
There are several nice wheels available to them on Europeon and Australian models. They should use one of them, and stop with the excuses.
This is not the first time Corvette shared a steering wheel with an economy car. The 1976 Corvette shared the same steering wheel with the Vega. I think the steering wheel being shared with the Malibu is the least of the problems with the new Corvette. The interior does not look like it has changed very much, the aluminum trim looks like the aftermarket stick on parts sold by the aftermarket vendors. I really expected a real change with the location of the instruments and a more user friendly "BMW" or "Audi" look. I think the outside looks decent, but still has the heavy C5 influence. Personally, the change from the C5 to C6 is not radical enough for me to trade in my currecnt C5 to purchase the C6. I think I will wait for the C7. Its nice but not nice enough to make me want one.
EBVette, couldn't have said it better myself. You have the right horses in your stable. Keep your cash for that 1963 because I'm looking forward to a cruise when I get to D.C.!!
